Why should I vote ANC?

Love or hate the DA or ANC or PAPAPAWWA (i.e. people against people against people...), the fact is that under the DA and the smaller parties, Cape Town has been run at least 900% better than under useless Mfeketo and the ANC.

This is fact. Its not a debate, not pro DA, not anti ANC or ID or PCTY.

Opinion would be that they can continue this much improved track record when/if they (DA + smaller parties) run the province.
I agree with capetownguy. The ANC had their day in Cape Town and the stuffed up. I reckon even today a few years down the line we are still picking up the pieces of mismanagement of the City's Coffers and no service delivery. What the ANC thought they were doing when they ran the City the Lord alone knows, but they did nothing, made no friends, we got higher tariffs for no service.
We don't need to even mention things like Nepotism etc. Mfeketo and her buddies must never run Cape Town ever again.

One more point and this goes to what timgaul says above. Proper or true Democracy can only be measured when parties form coalitions. It shows character and how mature our Society is.
One example of poor governance in the Cape was the fact that when Mfeketo was in power nobody, not even members of the public were allowed to get the agenda or be present in Council meetings. The doors were closed. I mean? How the heck can you run a local authority and close the doors to the ratepayers? I can understand the ANC not wanting the DA or other political parties in chambers, but the public. I still cannot get my head around that policy the ANC employed when the ran the Cape. Well it cost them dearly and rightly so.

Let me also get one thing clear. The DA is no white horse either. Here in our neighbouring Ward the DA Councillor nice chap and all does very little in the way of actual work, avoids public meetings and keeps a lot of the important stuff to himself. How much of this is his own inadequacies or him playing the party tune we may never know.

man this thread is really long and trying to read it all is just an information overload, but let me throw my 2c worth in there.

If the DA was truly committed to wanting to control the country and be in power how come the leaders have not gone out of their way to learn to and understand how to communicate with the largest portion of the population. In other words explain to me why Helen Zille is not fluent in either Zulu or Xhosa? You can not expect to be in power or have any say what so ever when you can not communicate effectively with the largest voter base in the country.

If I were a politician I would have gone out of my way to learn one of the popular local languages. The day I see a white politician address a rally in a language other than english or afrikaans is the day that I believe that we are truly a rainbow nation. But until such time we will continue to have debates like this with various accusations and counter accusations being thrown backwards and forwards.

The biggest thing holding this country back is communication and the language barrier is on of the largest obstacles standing in the way.

All the things ANC did for the country are not bad, I may say so so. It would be good for democracy to know whether anoter party can do a better job.

If DA or COPE runs the country, it would be interesting to see how they will cope with crime, poverty, crisis or whatever. If they perform worse than ANC, so we will be sure that ANC is THE PARTY the country needs.

Correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I know Madam Zille is akin to those languages as she speaks one or more of them at her rallies and is known to switch between English, Afrikaans and either Zulu or Xhosa (not sure which) on the fly.

Apparently Helen speaks English, Afrikaans, Xhosa and German.

And you point being regarding Hellen Zille?

Usefully she can also communicate with some of SA's EU trading partners in their native tongues, though she'll probably need a translator in the States (LOL):p

Well if Cape Town is any example...... then the ANC ISN't the party the country needs.

you might be right, but i have never heard a word of zulu or xhosa come out of her mouth, and knowing how to string a few sentences together is not what I mean. Im talking about being able to have a discussion and debate in those languages, you will never get anyhere politically if you can not communicate in a popular language and this applies to all political leaders

edit: and as much as we(forum users) would like to believe it, english is not the most popular language in South Africa

According to most sources she's fluent.

Yes, it's only the most popular second language in the world.

Penguin my question to you is this:

Out of all poor South Africans that fall below the bread line how many of them are actually white?

The numbers will never be the same since whites are the minority, but the percentage is about the same. The same as it works with the HIV numbers yes less white people have it or are poor but not if you put into percentage then it equals out.. ( I’m studying this )

AA/BEE are tools used to address social inequalities.

They do not appear to be working. The tools suffer from poor application visa viz nepotism and racism. The DA policies do not appose AA, they apposed the current implimentation regime because it's not working!.

The government needs to address the plight of the impoverished irrespective of race or colour or political affiliation.

Right now, the perception is, that if you're not Black, and a card carrying member of the ANC then you're going to suck the hindtit. If your community doesn't vote ANC, it's going to suck the hindtit.

Truth of the matter is that the ANC doesn't play nicely with others.

Historically the best method of addressing social inequalities is education.
Why has the ANC systematically crippled the education system in this country?

Word! :D

Thats where you are very much mistaken dude, the people vote for the ANC becuase of policies, like widening of the social security net, those without jobs know exactly what that means. Land reform is another they are aware of. Housing, no matter how much the ANC has under performed, but really the list goes on.

Do not make the same mistake that every opposition party, and most forumites for that matter, make. Which is to think the average voter is clueless and should not be entrusted to vote. But what they seem to forget is that no other political party has been singing the tune the voters want to hear. And IMO, that is democracy 101.

I dunno Sox, I likened it to an abused child. The ANC keeps telling them its going to change, give it time, and then spends another 5 years leaving many, many poor people still homeless, destitute and starving; while the ANC lives and prospers off their misery due to a lack of action. Yet, once again, they vote the party that has lied and gone back on their promises into power. Would you trust that child to take care of itself or would it be best for someone to step in on the child's behalf and make their decisions for them? How can you then trust the average citizen to vote, if this is the case.

What? Helen Zille is fluent in Xhosa! And Engish, Afrikaans and German. Sure, she may have an accent, but who doesn't these days :p

Did you not watch her speaking at the Sandton Convention centre at the announcement of the formation of a break away party from the ANC (namely COPE)? Half her speak was in Xhosa - I didn't know what was going on half the time, but the crowd was getting excited.

Sox i don't agree with you. Some may vote ANC because they have read and understand their policies and want to ensure those policies are fufilled. While others just vote because: "ANC promised me a house and electricity" I've seen people say that on the news myself. Not everyone is so amazingly informed as you think. Just as some people will simply vote DA because Helen Zille is white, or they think Cape Town looks pretty. People have lots of different reasons for voting and it's not due to extensive knowledge of the parties manifesto. That is the point i'm trying to make.

Here's an idea:

Many people vote for Helen because she has done a bloody good job.

capetownguy read what i said again please. I never said all. SOME NOT ALL people vote according to an informed choice.

I never said Helen Zille wasn't doing a good job. I believe she is. But that doesn't mean everyone who votes for Helen Zille votes based on that one perspective.

The question is, will those that are protesting in the streets vote ANC based on the good job they're doing?
