Afternoon dudes and dudettes,

Quick Bitlocker question.

Customer has a PC with Bitlocker enabled. They do have the Bitlocker Recovery Key.

Customer was having issues so performed a "Factory Reset of the PC", which I clarified as resetting Windows (removing all apps etc).

Does this remove the Bitlocker encryption as well? The PC is now stuck in a bootloop where it asks for the recovery key, they enter it, it restarts and asks for the key again.

I'm wondering if I can't just disable Bitlocker altogether, seeing as how all the data is already lost anyway. That aside though, any clues to whether or not resetting Windows would remove the key?

If data loss is no issue a good format and clean install should do the trick. If the Windows license is tied to the hardware it should activate with no problem.

If you are trying to recover the data that's a story for another day.

I actually have issues as well with Bitlocker. Just to confirm is Bitlocker not available on Windows 11 Home Edition, we bought a new Laptop and I can't get it to work.

This is probably a case of the Windows Data partition being hosed while the bootlocker boot partition still exists,so it's trying to boot an OS that doesn't exist

There are some recovery tools to try salvage but the best ones do cost some dosh (think like 2 or 3 grand)

Bitlocker full disk encryption is not available on Home (without some hacks)

Just for the record -

Ran into this exact issue when resetting my current PC - the only solution that worked for me was as the OP says - format and clean install.
