Windows 10: The Next Chapter

Should work if he fills the NEW key in during install ??

If it does not accept the old key, it won't accept the new one.

Unless Windows has "accepted" the key as valid and he can do software updates, etc.

But this is my last sentence about pirated software, if you use a laptop every day of your life and too cheapskate to pay for your OS, then you should not have a computer in the first place, or get yourself Linux.

The guy is trying to do the right thing by the sound of things, why get all excited :wtf:

If he had a pirated version of Windows 7 Pro, because he couldn't buy it anymore and hated Windows 8, then I fully understand.

This forum does not like you promoting pirating software, that's why I do not wish to discuss it anymore.

Downloading and installing language packs now work. Tried earlier in the week, but it wouldn't download.

Great news!!

Apps via the Beta App Store will now install with a local account. :)

Very impressive how fast Microsoft fix the bugs.

What's interesting is that they're actually making these builds available for download. Internally the builds are quite a bit beyond what we're seeing, but they have to make sure that what the public see is reasonably sort-of stable(ish). You can have a lot debugged but as new modules get baked in the team takes a decision not to release it because some sub-system is not ready yet.

BF4 played flawlessly last night. Using AMD drivers and Logitech software.

I reckon this dev team is moving at breakneck speed to get Windows 10 ready to ship.

Let's face it, Windows 8 was a total disaster for Microsoft. I cannot remember reading about one company that actually decided to take the plunge and upgraded their whole network to Windows 8. No sir, they all stayed put on Windows 7 Pro.

And Microsoft alienated some customers who moved over to OS X or Linux as their OS of choice.

But I firmly believe Windows 10 will be the consumer OS that saves Microsoft and really bring them back with a bang.

As an aside, Microsoft knew that businesses would not go for Windows 8 anyway, which is why they took the gamble with Win8's Metro. Most businesses back in late 2012 were only starting the move to Win7, after extensive testing. Microsoft quite openly said many times in mid-2012 that they don't expect Win8 to be adopted by businesses, so that's hardly an indication of its success or failure. It's all there in our discussions in 2012.

Win10 is something else entirely. Microsoft is aiming this squarely at everyone, both consumers initially, and businesses in mid-2016. This might well be the last "new version" of Windows for a very long time. The whole system has basically been re-engineered under the covers to be easily and continually updated. Microsoft is aiming to end the "New Version Big Bangs" that we've known since Win 3.0. From Win10 onwards it's Windows as a Service. Continual updating. And persuading corporate to let Msft do that is the biggest challenge they face. It'll be slow at first, but I think they'll prove they can do it, like Office 365. By 2017 the stampede to WaaS will be well underway.

A company as big as Microsoft doesn't take gambles with their share price.

It was more a case of Steve Ballmer not knowing what the next big thing should be, not able to give direction, and allowing Steven Sinofsky to soldier on with Metro.

Also, how can you say to the public that your latest and greatest OS is not actually any good, and you don't expect a lot of business to use it? If I was a shareholder of that company, I would fire the whole lot....which is exactly what happened after Windows 8's release.

Microsoft needs to get back into the game, as Chrome OS, OS X and Linux are starting to steal away lifelong customers and more and more Chrome OS hardware are shipping & Windows Phone 8 has not exactly set the world on fire. Obviously manufacturers are cheesed-off with Microsoft for launching their own hardware (meet Surface), and it remains to be seen how it will play out.

My best guess is that Microsoft knew it was now or never and have risen to the challenge - meet Windows 10 and HoloLens. :D

I truly believe Windows 10 is the consumer + company OS that will save Microsoft and bring a lot of old customers back.

I would love Microsoft to add a feature where you can drag an entire group of tiles.

I hope Microsoft will add the dragging of multiple tiles, I tried the CRTL + Left click tiles and this didn't work.

You mean you would like for them to return the feature. I know it's a preview with some rough edges but why remove features.

Is it safe to say that if it runs on Win 8.1 it will run on 10?

Any programs that work on Windows Vista, 7 and 8/8.1 in desktop mode but weren't updated for Windows 10 will run essentially sandboxed in their own container and will think that they are running on any one of those systems. So, yes, if it runs on 8.1 it'll run on 10. The reason for the "sandbox" mode is that Winows 10 is now a rolling release, so things will always be a bit jumbled when it comes to what build you're running compared to others.
