Windows 8.1 What do you think?

My windows 8.1 install produces a BSOD lol; exception not handled error :(

Re: the imminent release of Win 8.1 ...

I'm currently running Win 8 on my laptop, and I use a lot of open-source / free software (e.g. Thunderbird, LibreOffice 4, VLC Media Player, Fox-it reader, Skype, and many others)

I see the final Win 8.1 release will be an ISO image. So does that mean a clean install, and that I would lose all other programs on my laptop? ... and so have to download and re-install them all again?

AFAIK the final release will be available from the app store and will upgrade in place.

Havent had a days problem with my windows 8 gaming PC. I really dont see the point of a start button. Waste of screen real estate. Dont have a start button on gnome 3 or Windows 8. I dont wanna go backwards and get one.

What I have found with windows 8. Its easier for new users to adapt to than people who have used previous versions of windows.

So yeah, awesome stability and speed, not a days problem. One of the more solid OS`s from MS that I have experienced (and I have been a power user since 3.1).

I'll stick with this, thanks....

Windows 8 looks like that except the start button is not there.

There is a difference between the start menu (which you think is hideous) and the desktop. The desktops are pretty much exactly the same. The windows 8 start menu just has more bling than the one you have one windows 7.

Personally I think the win7 and win8 desktops are boring and not customizable enough. If you want a fluid eye candy experience you need something like customized gnome3. If you want meh... well my windows 8 desktop is like yours. Meh. I always feel like I take a step backwards when I go back to windows :( Just a warning Gnome 3 doesnt even have a task bar. If people went bat**** crazy over a start button they`ll burn buildings if you try teach them that a taskbar is also unnecessary.

Gary doesn't deserve to use any windows except windows ME. Gary, reformat and install ME now!

I loved ME when I used it, I actually refused to move to Windows XP because it looked so weird and the start menu was so different, I hated the look of XP.

When I eventually moved to XP (I think SP2 was out then) I couldn't believe how stupid I was in staying on ME, I still used the 'classic' start menu though.

Bought it for 300 bucks & shelved it. (Tested the preview before that)

I'll install it after the 8.1 fix....

Hope they have a way to disable to start button thingy.
So far cant in the 8.1 Preview. Personally I don't have an issue as it make for a much larger target to hit to invoke Start (which I mainly use as a desktop program launch menu).

My old desktop Windows 7:

My new one with Windows 8, bought that Stardock Start8 program, best $5 I spent. Using 8GadgetPack 6.0 for the gadgets

Start8 or ClassicShell?

Start8, I gave ClassicShell a try for a long time, in the end I didn't like it because for some reason I couldn't make links to my Downloads/Pictures/Videos folders, I guess it's because I moved them to another hard drive. I gave Start8 a try and it does everything, nice and neat and dead simple to setup.
