--Give a short explanation of the problem

Everyday, without fail, my ping literally increases from 30ms to 500ms+ (going up to 1000ms and being completely unstable) after 6pm, then only drops again around 11pm. This is even worse on weekends. The latency increases up to 800ms after 11am then only drops after 7pm. Those times are basically the only times I use my internet, so it's extremely frustrating. Been like this for over a month. So close to changing ISP's

Plumstead ADSL problems

Had this issue many months back and it was resolved temporarily. It has been back with a vengeance for the last month.
First Digits of Phone Number: 021 762 xxxx
ADSL line speed: 1MBS
ISP name and account type: MWEB 1MB Uncapped
Times: Due to me only being on from about 7PM, I will list that. 7PM starts off with about 130ms or so and it climbs steadily in to the +1000ms bracket by about 9PM. It calms down around 11PM. This is during the week. Weekends can be bad during the day as well but I am generally working so it is difficult for me to get a read on it but it is more random. During the weekday, if I have a day off, I will always have low latency (12ms on average) to the first hop which points to the DSLAM / Exchange.

Hope this goes a long way to eventually getting it fixed or at least to get a collaboration of people in the same area banding together to prove to Telkom that there is a problem!

First confirm which exchange you're connected to:

http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/search/phone/

I'm on WYNBERG UMC B40B1 (WWG+), and haven't experienced any problems.

Same here. Both me and family connected to Wynberg and don't have any problems whatsoever. Full line speed and good pings at all times over various ISP accounts. I don't think there's an exchange problem, but OP is with Telkom Internet and I've got loads of clients with them suffering similar. I think its a case ot TI being overloaded here... Same client who suffered 500ms local pings and REALLY slow internet changed over to Afrihost capped and flying now. Afrihost offer a free 1GB accounbt. Get one and test with it, you'll soon know if its exchange or ISP.

Same issue as GripZA:

I've even tried MWeb trial account with the same results.

I'm in Plumstead - connected to WYNBERG (WWG+) exchange.

Same as OP. Terrible pings, inconsistent download speeds. Streaming is impossible. Been going on like this for months, but the last few weeks have been the worst.

Line dropping. It's has been like this for the past few months.

Had previous issues with the line, a tech was dispatched twice already and it was determined that the fault is "simply the best they can do."

Problems in plumstead, according to my neighbour who had major issues as well we are about 4.5km from the exchange.
Terrible pings, inconsistent download speeds.
Tried multiple ISP accounts as well.

The problem seems to occur during 6pm - 12pm, the best times to use the internet appear to be the early hours of the morning.

Exchange Name Wynberg Umc B40b1
Exchange Code WWG+
ND Code 21
Location Code 462
Interconnect WWG+ directly connected to DPSU

Guys I am back out of desperation now. Spoke to my ISP who contacted Telkom who confirmed my problem is due to congestion. The real kicker is that Telkom said the congestion starts as early as 2-4am in the morning and continues all day. Apparently it is the DSLAM I am connected to. But if other people on different DSLAMs in the same exchange aren't having problems, then why are they not looking at changing the DSLAM's that people are connected to in order to balance the load?

I really need advice on what to do. I have practically no internet access, 24/7. Just ran a speed test again and got a download speed of 46kbps!!! I am going to contact PM TelkomZA and see what happens. But surely there is some other route I can take to lodge a formal complaint against Telkom? Any suggestions?

I uploaded two videos on Youtube if anybody is interested in seeing just how bad my situation is:

Speedtest:

The videos were on a GOOD day!

My speed is autrocious. It's been getting worse over the past 2 months.
Last night it was on 0.1Mbs (on a 1Mbs line)
I can't even view webpages as it keeps timing out.
I logged 3 calls to Telkom last week and they keep closing them saying that my line is fine.
*pulling my hair out*

Hi I agree, My speed is so bad i dont even want to use the net.
Last night I was getting a 900ms ping, .17Mbps Download and .07 upload on an Internet solutions 1MB line.

This morning I get a 350ms ping, .98 download and .79 upload.

My ISP reckons its the distance from the exchange and my attenuation......I have had this line 4 3 years, nothing has changed, SNR & attenuation are more or less the same, and y would I get my full speeds during non peak hours! Time to change ISP's maybe???

During peak periods (evenings and weekends) ADSL is extremely slow and generally unpleasant to use. During working hours it's fantastic. Note that at about 8am on a working day, pings are about 25ms and uploads/downloads run flat-out. During the evening, I can't even stream low-quality internet radio, let alone video.

Phone number - 021 761 xxxx [WYNBERG (WWG+) exchange]
ADSL line speed - 2 Mbps
ISP name and account type - Telkom Internet SoftCapped 20 GB (I don't/can't exceed the cap, so that's not the problem!)
Typical time of day - Evenings and weekends (Home-user peak times)

I've noticed that during the congested peak times DNS lookups were sometimes taking up to an average of 3 seconds each. Occasionally lookups got dropped entirely and resulted in "site not found" warnings. The delay added by DNS lookups was slowing things considerably. I manually fudged the settings to different servers for several weeks, and it helped. I am back to automatic now, and in the last week (or so) the DNS delays have not been quite as bad as the past several months. [Edit: Spoke to soon; it's rubbish again! Maybe the neighbours took a week off...]
The automatically assigned settings are - Primary DNS Server: 196.43.34.190, Secondary: 196.43.53.190

I've also tested an Afrihost unshaped account. Their results are not significantly different, but their DNS servers always seemed to cope better in peak hours.

Telkom DSL acknowledged that they are aware of an issue at the exchange and they are "running tests". No estimate for any resolution of the problem.

Having issues with my connection for the past week. Connection was fine prior to that. Although I could only sync at 5MB due to my distance from the exchange, my connection was stable (good latency, download speeds, browsing, streaming, etc.). For the past week or so however my connectivity has been inconsistent and intermittent. I'm connected to the WYNBERG UMC B40B1 (WWG+) Exchange.

Weekends cant say yet will check this weekend.

I tried the Afrihost 1gb free to see and if its the IPS and similar results.

I am just wondering if this is the kind speed I can be expecting because then I am gonna cancel it.

I am on the same exchange, get the same problems. I've spoken to TelkomZA on these forums and he's told me that the exchange is congested, so we apparently have to wait for Telkom to upgrade the exchange (according to him, they are aware of it and are planning to do so, but he couldn't give me a date).
