Xbox 360 Kinect reviews

To be honest, Sony are the only people who got this "right" by using the camera and physical motion controller, this adds more versatility. Either way this appeals to a certain market and it's casual fun.

An interesting take, but in the end of the day capturing the "core" market has nothing to do with the hardware itself and all about the games. Kinect can be a great success if the right types of games come out. Just because people haven't solved the issue of how to move or what kinds of games will work best, doesn't mean they won't be able to as knowledge about the hardware matures. I mean lets just compare the first set of XBOX360 games to those coming out now (or first PS3 games for that matter - often broken or unoptimized ports of 360 games).

That said, PlayStation Move, while being far more conservative compared to Kinect, solves a lot of these problems. By essentially evolving the Wiimote concept and sticking with buttons and analog sticks, gameplay elements such as "how do I move" or "how do I do X" are far simpler and straighforward and fall into what we (developers and consumers) are comfortable with. Kinect needs a whole rethink as to how these things are done, and it's going to be a while (if ever).

To say that Kinect is clearly not for the core gamer based on essentially 6 launch titles (1 of which I would consider a "core" game, unless you consider games of the Guitar Hero ilk not "core" enough - I'm speaking of course of Dance Central) is a bit disingenuous. We haven't seen really what people can do with it yet.

I have a feeling however that Microsoft will probably end up releasing (within 6-12 months) some hand-held "mini" controllers that fit in the palm of your hand with buttons and an analog stick as a sort of "Kinect Core" supplement or something, capable of also tracking things such as wrist rotation (which Kinect can't do out the box).

They are stuck in the past

Actually, for price sensitive customers, the 4GB console is a great thing, and essentially supplants the Arcade. Additionally, having at least SOME storage in it (unlike the Arcade which comes with a 256MB memory card) means that it's easier for developers to now be guaranteed that at minimum every XBOX360 will have storage built in (a huge complaint that has been laid against MS in the past).

That said, I would say MS is far from stuck in the past, with probably the most forward thinking and technically advanced attempt at the whole motion controller thing. Will it succeed? Still early days and it could fail spectacularly if not supported appropriately, but one could never fault the tech itself for being stuck in the past.

The first prototype of Kinect cost MS $30 000. They've managed to squeeze the same technology into a $150 item. How is that a rip off????

Tell that to Sony when everyone asked why the PS3 is so expensive. Anyway R2000 is the cost of a Wii console IN FULL . I also believe PS3 Move is cheaper than this [like R600 for the starter kit? ] , so yes, this is an expensive toy which does not actually seem to do anything different than the Wii or PS3 Move .... If you re-invent wheel and make it square, don't pawn those costs onto me.

I was a rAge and had the opportunity of playing with both the Move and Kinect... and there is a huge difference people! One has you holding something physical and the other has you holding, eh Nothing!
See one is visible the other invisible, get it ;-) got it, good.

Now go and buy something you never would have imagined possible 10 years ago!!!!
