Xbox Series X / S

Those studios were given the chance to release their games. What people are forgetting is that it's a business, and if those games were not profitable, then their chance was squandered unless you have the unrealistic opinion that game studios just get free passes to make and develop what they want at somebody else's expense.

Also, everyone was happy to **** on Arkane for Redfall, but now everyone is upset they got the boot.

I'm upset about Tango Gameworks. They made some of my favourite games.

Hifi Rush won the following awards:

And sales wise:

Sales

The game reached 2 million players by March 2023, which has been counted as a mix of both digital sales and downloaded Game Pass subscriptions.[35] By August 2023, the game reached 3 million players between purchased copies and Game Pass subscriptions.[36]

Well they do actually. Phil is very outspoken of how they let their studios do what they want. Redfall is the result. Perfect Dark is being talked about on GAF right now. Years into development and they don't even know what camera to go with.

Tango made a great game and hold a good record but guess what. NONE of you Xbox shills paid for it.

Tell me again how sustainable Game Pass is?

Unfortunately even though games like Ghostwire Tokyo and Hifi Rush were decent games, I only played then because they were on Game Pass. I doubt I would have ever played then unless they were heavily discounted.

Game Pass has been going since 2017.

Game Pass subscriptions make $1 billion in revenue per quarter. We don't know about profit yet. Currently I'd say none due to the amount that MS is paying to buy all the companies.

Game Pass has around 25 million subscribers.

And we didn't have to buy Hifi Rush because it was on Game Pass. That's how it works. NONE of us paid for it. Of course not. It's a subscription service. You pay for the subscription and then play the games on the subscription.

But those aren't pure sales, that's the problem with Game Pass. They can boast about big numbers of players all they want but it really means nothing at the end of the day, because most of those players are already Game Pass subs. It's just muddying the waters. I have no idea how they classify something as a success there and seems like they don't either

Yeah, I just posted that because sales was brought up.

I'm very disappointed in the closure of the studio and would love to know why MS did it. It frustrates me that a company that won awards, released good games and had over 2 million play their games wasn't deemed good enough.

It also makes me worry about other studios over at MS. MS is just notoriously bad with buying studios and closing them down. I hate it.

And they've been babbling about Japan and more support there for ages now, and then they go ahead and close their only Japan studio. Just crazy if you ask me.

Whats up with these gaming giants just fscking us around?

The whole Helldivers 2/Sony fiasco now MS closing studios, it seems like gamers and developers vs corporate greed. If MS can do this so can Sony and I think gaming studios are going to be weary of being acquired going forward.

I think we don't understand the full picture yet in the gaming industry in general.

For all we know it could just be restructuring to speed up delivery and cut costs. It doesn't make sense to have 100 different studios with 100 different excos all making decisions that don't align with the parent company. When you can consolidate the actual talent behind more well established brands like Bethesda while trimming the fat.

Just an example, but we won't know until they release the reasons...

I have a theory...

Investment co's saw Gaming as the next gold mine in 2020 with Covid.
but with all that sweet Blackrock capital came a bitter pill

2022-24 we seeing what that pill is doing.

I think that MSs plan all along for acquiring studios is not about building up a catalogue of new games, it was about buying the IP and the people to work on that IP, and using the games to attract subscribers, and online games for micro-transactions and seasons passes.

All these smaller studios that came along with the Zenimax acquisition was likely just an irritation for MS which is why they never really got involved in what they were busy developing, just as long as it released within a certain amount of time. Now that all is released, for better or worse, they have no need for them.

IMO, Xbox as a division of MS will likely cease to exist in 5 years time in its current form. I am guessing that Game Pass will be rebranded as Microsoft Games 365 (or something like that) with a major drive on cloud gaming. The Xbox console will likely come in 3 flavours, namely, a hand held, a streaming dongle, and a niche console which will likely be smiley to a high end gaming PC.

Could be wrong but to me it's the logical path forward to MS.

but the actual talent is part of the culling, Tango Gameworks had amazing success with Hi-Fi Rush, yet that didn't keep them out of the firing line

So like EA in the 90s and Embracer group recently...these large mergers all end up the same way: lots of job losses and IP that dies out if it's not COD. I guess people thought (hoped) that MS would be different but they're just Activision 2.0 at this point.

Reading all the news this morning it makes me even angrier. So apparently they are saying that they were spread too thin. Then why buy all the companies?

Also sounds like they are thinking of increasing the price of Game Pass again and to not let Call of Duty on Game Pass. Don't know how true all of this is.

It looks like they expected a lot more sales of XBox because of Game Pass but that never materialized. And in my opinion it's because they need those big awesome exclusives. And games like Halo and Starfield were just so average. Not even to speak of Forza Motorsport that was such a shitshow that it was the first game that I ever gave a one star rating to.

All they needed to do was make good games, make them exclusive and put them on Game Pass and you'd sell more consoles. But currently people can just play them on pc, and now some of them on PS5 too. Why would people buy an XBox?

I love my XBox but I hate how retarded the whole division is run.

All they needed to do was spend the 70 Billion on 1 year excl rights for gamepass and people would have been flogging. They dont even need to own it, just the right to have it exclusive day one.

Imagine Robocop, Assassins Creed Mirage, Avatar and whatnot all on Xbox for "free" before the comp had access, they would have been selling consoles like Hot Cake. But nooo "let's go buy a company so big that we forced by law not to have an edge over the competition"

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot in order to run a race.

So I'm not a huge follower of moves like this, but as I understand it the core team (Shinji Mikami and a number of others) at Tango Gameworks up sticks and left to start their own thing, I'd hazard a guess that is one of the drivers for MS to shutter the studio.
