You cannot have it both ways Vodacom

Where's Jannie? I'm sure he will be along to clear up this misunderstanding :whistle:

He already did. There was a thread about this last week I think, maybe earlier this week. He was also against Vodacom calling it 4G, but was in the minority.

It was a mistake. The press release was not meant to sound like a factual statement ("LTE is 4G") and should have read something like "LTE, often referred to as 4G" rather than how it was written by that specific author.

Reality is that LTE is not 4G, but as much of a reality is that most people now refer to 4G and not LTE. So it's a mess that's going to become more and more problematic.

When we launched LTE, we got Apple to change the icon to read LTE, for example, but now they just use 4G, etc. Pretty much the vendors and press (nearly all local journos - excluding MyBB) call LTE 4G.

Best we get LTE-A off the ground so there is an actual, proper, MyBB-approved 4G out there. ;)

So semantics then. Only thing that changes is the size and speed of the OOB shark.

My HTC One used to say 4G, then swapped to LTE, now after the newer update it is back to saying 4G. :( It causes havoc on the OCD :P

So anyone looking forward to Windows 9, often referred to as Windows 10?

This stuff up started in the USA and is now having repercussions around the world.

Even the ITU themselves gave out conflicting information at one point in time....

See THIS article from back in 2010 when it was already a major headache.

Could clear up the confusion by calling it 4GS, oh wait...

I commented on this many times and fought with many people (technical people) with regards to this. It's really annoying :twisted:

You reckon ICASA's BS is feeding into the system?

Hey Jannie,

Have you guys heard anything about Motorola possibly relaunching in SA?Will Vodacom carry the new nexus 9" tablet made by htc or any other nexus devices?thanx

Indeed and can't see it getting any better soon.

My suggestion to the ITU at the time was to rather call anything with speeds in excess of 100Mb/s 4G. This actually solved all the issues and would have made more sense for most consumers (who really cares about all the acronyms and technologies?)

Something like:

2G = 1 to 9Mb/s
3G = 10 to 99Mb/s
4G = 100 to 999Mb/s
5G = 1GB/s to 9Gb/s

Will this ever end. We started to hear of 4g ages ago and this confusion is not getting better

My iPhone 5S (on Vodacom) has always said 4G...while it's obviously on LTE.

So this has never really been something I would have lost sleep over.
