You cannot have it both ways Vodacom

Ironically at the time that Vodacom and MTN complained we pointed out this international mess and devices being marketed as 4G. Neither of them wanted to listen and instead went with an ITU definition. They should now reap what they have sown. It will be a long time before South Africa has 4G while the rest of the world will be looking forward to 5G. :D

Really. Where in the rest of the world is 4G (proper) rolled out?

In south Africa both Vodacom and Telkom showed 4G in real, live networks.

Then, you seem to completely missed what happened a few years ago. Had nothing to do with LTE being called 4G.

I'd love a pure customer experience orientated branding definition approach (not just bandwidth though) although I would avoid using G as the indicator because it has a technical meaning ascribed

Maybe Vodacom (actually Vodafone) should brand services in Vs - 4V
Indeed and can't see it getting any better soon.

My suggestion to the ITU at the time was to rather call anything with speeds in excess of 100Mb/s 4G. This actually solved all the issues and would have made more sense for most consumers (who really cares about all the acronyms and technologies?)

Something like:

2G = 1 to 9Mb/s
3G = 10 to 99Mb/s
4G = 100 to 999Mb/s
5G = 1GB/s to 9Gb/s

Someone obviously can't read irony.

Respect to Jannie and Vodacom for owning up to the mistake. The Cell C 4G debate also started with a press statement, and then grew into a big marketing campaign and the ASA battle.

If it was not for the ASA ruling, I think all networks would have used the 4G term to market their LTE networks and services. Vodafone certainly does that…

Found this recently - I see Vodafone has been punting HSPA+ as 4G:

The phone on the left is on LTE and the one on the right on H+. That's kinda in line with what we've seen done in other countries, i.e. LTE=4G.

But then; where the hell does that 4G hspa+ logo come from? It's not even accurate against their own ad. (I'll try and find out)

its just not cricket

Not really.

What's that old saying? No need for conspiracy theories if plain old idiocy can explain it.....
Hanlon's or Heinlein's razor "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity" has several ways of being expressed:
cockup before conspiracy
You have attributed conditions to villainy that simply result from stupidity
misunderstandings and neglect create more confusion in this world than trickery and malice. At any rate, the last two are certainly much less frequent

my favourite:
Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity, but don't rule out malice.

probably most apt:
accountants\marketers before engineers :D
