Your Favourite Open Source Software?

Thanks. I will catch up with my Backlog over the next few days. Hopefully will be able to tie up the loose ends to upload the list to the new site and go live soon.

I have been making a csv with the list plus the website, source code link, license and description to pull into a post entry template using the Worpress API but it's taking too long to input the additional data so I think I'm going to just upload it as is and update it later so we can get going.

Is this list confined to software only? What about useful information licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license?

Here is an example: CERT Societe Generale has just released some easy to use operational security incident best practices, titled Incident Response Methodologies (IRMs). They have recently been reviewed and cover some of the most common security incidents that are typically managed by a CERT, such as:

Worm infection
Social Engineering
Information Leakage
Insider abuse
Customer Phishing
Scams
Trademark Infringement
Phishing
Ransomware
Lareg-scal compromise
Windows intrusion
Unix / Linus intrusion and detection
DDoS
Malicious network behaviour
Website defacemment
Malware detection
Blackmail
Smartphone malware

They are not only reflex sheets for use during a security incident, but also provide guidance (based on NIST) on the full incident management lifecycle: Preparation, Identification, Containment, Remediation, Recovery, and Lessons learned.

For now, the list is dedicated to promoting open source software specifically for now. I wanted to keep the scope manageable and avoid mission creep.

I totally agree that there is a lot of other open source information that is not software that has value - @oldhat also suggested including open source hardware previously and I am open to extending the scope to these areas at some point. Moving the list to a proper website should facilitate this sort of thing I think.

Thanks for the IRM's you linked above. I'll definitely be referencing them for improving processes at work.

Good morning everyone. Compliments of the season to you all.

I'm happy to announce that the list has been officially moved to the New Site HERE :)

Hope you all like the new home for the list. It is a bit 'minimum viable product' and has a deliberately minimal look and feel but I will make incremental improvements going forward, particularly in terms of expanding the content.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Special mentions to @oldhat for his prolific contributions and to @Jade @ Absolute Hosting for generously sponsoring the hosting and domain registration.

This is a tricky one. Zerotier uses the BSL license which places restrictions on reuse of the code and is self proclaimed not an Open Source license, particulalry in terms of commercial use. So it's not freeware and the source code is published but it's not FLOSS in the strict sense.

There's a few important projects including Elasticsearch, MongoDB and MariaDB that have adopted this license and I still haven't really made a decision as to whether they should be included on the list or not (MariaDB is but I hadn't checked its licensing when I added it!)

There's an argument on both sides - on the one hand, businesses built around Open Source need to be able to make money off the back of their products and that doesn't always happen sufficiently in terms of the open source ideal. On the other hand there have been a few companies over the years that have benefited from their communities' contributions to open source only to turn around and place more restrictive licensing on the software once they have gained a certain market share.
