YouTube tests blocking people who use ad-blockers

YouTube could block viewers with ad blockers enabled from watching videos on the platform, and the change is currently in testing.

The Google-owned company confirmed to The Verge that it is currently testing a feature that will prompt viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads or try YouTube Premium.

For all its faults, I like YouTube. I think it provides value in my life, and I'm willing to pay for that.
There are two payment methods: watch ads, or subscribe to premium.
I don't like ads, and I don't really want my kids to watch them either, so I pay the R72 per month.

YouTube Music sucks, Spotify's algorithm is much better, but I won't pay for another music streaming service just out of principle.

I found SmartTubeNext Beta to work better than Google's Youtube App on my Google TV Box.

Many features:
  • frame rate matching
  • frame rate doubling
  • speed adjusting
  • SponsorBlock
  • AdBlock
  • PiP
  • hdr
  • av01
  • vp9
  • etc

I suspect the same mechanisms being described in the article are going to start making these 3rd-party clients also not work.

I could be wrong but that's just my suspicion.

Did they drop the 1080p bitrate during covid now they want us to get premium to view the normal 1080p bitrate or is this actually higher than it currently ever was?

I think that was a test, but it wasn't made permanent.

I vaguely remember hearing something about that. But they are introducing new more efficient codecs I think?

I understand people don't like ads but then pay for the service rather than defeating what ultimately funds the service.

Ads were quite alright a few years back, before you got non-skippable 2 minute ads, videos filled with sponsored content, and sometimes 30-minute plus ads in some videos.

Use this one too. It’s good but the search and recommendations don’t really seem to work. It always recommends the same videos (that I don’t watch) over and over

I've never come across a 30min unskippable ad to date. But still, it costs money for them to host the service so pay for it either with your eyes on the ads or your wallet.

What if I have both Youtube Premium and I still use an Ad Blocker?
I am in this exact situation and I haven't noticed anything.

They generally do a/b testing for a while though before rolling out a new feature permanently so it might be that I'm not in the test group.

YouTube Premium is actually worth it and not too expensive.
So cheap and worth it that he has to constantly do fong kong methods to get subscriptions in other cheaper regions before being forced to pay the full South African price.
