Zimbabwe orders Internet shutdown

Seems the Zim attempt to shut down social media or the internet has been totally ineffective. I'm still seeing posts from Zim mates on Facebook and have received an email or two from in the country today as well.

Maybe some of them walks across the border to come make tweets or use Facebook, just like they're crossing over with empty cans to come buy petrol..

They re-opened it.

Yup, last night sometime..

I was getting stuff during the course of the day from people in Harare itself... so clearly the shut down wasn't totally successful which isn't really surprising.

It hasn't looked good there in about 30 years..
More like 20 yrs. Zimbabwe was actually doing fairly well up to 2000. The first land seizures were in the late 1990's and it accelerated in the early 2000's when Mugabe really started losing the plot. By 2008 the currency collapsed.

It took a decade from the first forced land seizures to total economic collapse. In 1997 the exchange rate was a liveable 10 Z$ : 1 US$ by the end of 2008 it was 700BN Z$ : 1 US$.

This - I spent a month in Zim in 1996 - was very nice and all seemed to be working fine.

The economy in Zim has been shaky most of the time... their official inflation rate has never dropped below 7%, and more often than not its been above 15% until it went tits up in the 90's and averaged around 25%

Yeah, but it was somewhat liveable and a far remove from million+ percent inflation. If they'd only maintained property rights and fiscal responsibility it could have turned out so much better.

Everything is always good the first few years after takeover with it being attributed to the takeover while everything else is the result of the past. It's astonishing how close SA mimics the same trajectory. Then the talk and encouragement of land seizure started and it went belly up.

So this is the country our wise EFF/ANC politicians hold up as a success story and want to emulate.
