Zuma gunning for the constitution

I will repeat this: There are things he simply cannot do in terms of the Constitution. It will never be allowed.

Sorry Blu but have to disagree, excellent examples, Nkandla, e-tolls.... all things which should never have been allowed yet here we are.

Important to see things in a global perspective and not become one of those Suidlander types.

Damn, looking globally at the DRC, the Suidlanders still have sh*t with all the men and guns on their modified bakkies riding around shooting innocent citizens, raping and killing women and children and keep attacking military and law enforcement institutions....

+1, but there are certain boundaries he cannot cross.

If he does get 75%+ of the vote, just if ;), how can there be any boundaries? Please explain what you say or mean as just waffling on and on with the same idea does not convince me at all. What can Zuma not do if he get's 75%+ of the vote??????????

Please let us know what you are referring to in the case of SA. Also while you are it, compare our Constitution to theirs.

The problem is that Africa has far too many examples in it's history of "strong" men that will grab power and they with ruthlessly destroy anybody that gets in their way. Examples like Idi Amin, Rwanda, Congo (several times), Sudan, Sani Abacha, Robert Mugabe, Charles Taylor etc.
A constitution is for a civilized democratic country with leaders that respect the rule of law. Dictators are none of those.

He can do anything he likes in that case ..... but the point is the ANC will not get 75% of the votes. Why worry about that?

Those countries either did not have a Constitution, or they did not have a liberal one like ours.

You're still missing the point - you can have the best constitution in the world, if somebody decides to take power by force a constitution is meaningless. I suggest you find a copy of the move Last King of Scotland to see how the masses will follow someone that gives them the right message and they will plunder and murder and nothing will stop them, as in the case of Ethiopia and Rwanda. And if you think the wold will not allow that to happen you are wrong, because by the time anybody realizes what is going on it will be too late to stop it.

I happen to be an optimist and believe it won't happen to us, but I'm also old enough to realize the risks of living in Africa.

I propose splitting the presidency - prime minister elected by parliament and an independent non-executive president elected by the people. Neither need any term restriction and the later may just as well be a monarch.

There's something seriously wrong with the world if an uneducated politician can override educated/enlightened instruments like the law and constitution on a popularity vote, to such an extend that he's able to openly rob people without them being able to stop him or demand justice be served.

The ANC does not need to take power by force. It already has the power :)

I have seen the last King of Scotland. On a MUCH lighter note, once the Indians are kicked out of the country, you know it's time to leave. The proverbial canary in the coal mine :D

I'll keep an eye on Hussain 3 desks down, if he misses more than 2 days I'll panic.
