Hi Guys

For the past two weekends I have had about 20% packet loss causing basically internet to be unusable, 2 weeks ago was late on a thurs night right through to sunday afternoon, now this last weekend friday morning to sunday afternoon. Now here's the kicker...

1) Line stats report perfect on multiple routers and to telkom
2) Axxess Prepaid, Mweb Uncapped and Telkom Guest give the same results
3) Line speed profile changing made no difference
4) Tried all the combinations of trouble shooting under the sun.
5) No sync loss or connection dropping.
6) Load reported on exchange was classed as average

What does one do when there is no visible problem to ISP or Telkom that fixes itself before there would be a chance for a technician to have a look. I dont know if it will happen next weekend but advice would be more than welcome.

Thanks in advance

most don't read or comprehend it seems...

@KinsZA, to rule that out, did it rain this weekend and last?
how do you know load on the exchange is average btw?

Exchange load "Average" I got from telkom. And its very try
------------------------------
To the guys interested in my line stats
SNR Down 14db
SNR Up 18db
Attenutation Down: 38db
Attenuation up 5.5db
-----------------------------------
Remember it did the same thing with lower line profiles which of course vastly improve the SNR.

I haven't dropped a packet in 2 hours so far and I was dropping one every couple of seconds both weekends now and my line stats are the same as they were on the weekend.

While it was coming right on sunday instead of dropping a packet I'd get like 500-700ms to mweb site where I usually dropped them and then about 30 mins later 42-43ms (my usual) for everything. So in the space of 30 mins everything went from pear shaped to fine, just like it went from fine to pear shaped.

my line has been dropping constantly aswell since december 2010, had telkom here 3 times, still not fixed. im tired of logging faults so i just live with it
it however does not disconnect that much, mayber once every 2-3 hours

Well since its working fine for now (I'll see if it follows the trend only happening on weekends), but we're talking IS, Mweb and Saix networks same issue so the only place it could be is between my place and/or the exchange.

Regardless if it happens again I'll do tracerts until it eventually stuffs out.

tbh, sounds like the generic 'tell them everything's fine when something's broke' story. if you notice it again this weekend it must be the near-first hops caving when the guys in your area open their pipes ...err... i mean straws :)

I've been having exactly the same problems. Reported it to Telkom and they signed off on the fault as "resolved" without even coming out or calling me.

Started again yesterday afternoon, apparently faults still open and they're going to finish looking at it today (sounds like stall tactics), anyways problem still there when I woke up not too long ago.

If traceroute failed it would be in a random spot in one of the three results it gives you so thats useless

Did you escalate it?

One problem is your Attenuation down, cause there shouldnt be a big difference between both db's. From experience it averages around 4 - 5 difference if lines working efficiently. Although your SNR is perfectly fine.

Connection Status Connected
Us Rate (Kbps) 128
Ds Rate (Kbps) 384
US Margin 14
DS Margin 20
Trained Modulation ADSL_G.dmt
LOS Errors 0
DS Line Attenuation 35
US Line Attenuation 22

Is this an OK stat list? My ping is huuuuge at the moment. 350 ms to telkom.co.za!

Stats are fine with that you could get 4 meg

Post a tracert to local and international

Also what router and ISP are you using?

Well Telkom fixed the problem, when asking what the problem was all that I managed to get was "It's written here that it was something exchange related" my line stats remain unchanged.
