Folks, I am not at all telecom hardware savvy but have to resort to a DIY solution because it’s turning out that 8ta/Telkom’s customer service is totally crap.

I’m in the market for mobile broadband because I don’t have a telephone line at home. 8ta seemed to have a good promotion (2 GB + 1GB promo) so I signed up. Only after the customer service person I was dealing with had given me a SIM card and redeemed my data bundle purchase (so the clock on my 60 day prepaid data bundle has been ticking since Saturday) did 8ta tell me that they have no 3G modems in their store! Turns out that the Rosebank Telkom Direct store also doesn’t have modems and all the “Participating Dealers” near me don’t have 8ta modems either!

I’ll have to buy a modem from another mobile broadband provider and have decided to buy Cell “C’s Red Bull MOBILE Huawei E367” modem. Could someone please do me a favor and explain to me in simple terms how to setup the Cell C modem to work with my 8ta SIM?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Newbie_SA_Net!

The settings required for 8ta to work are:
APN = internet
Dial up number: *99#
No username or password should be entered.

We will be addressing the modem stock issue at the store.

Hi,

I downloaded the 8ta dashboard on someone else's network in Randburg and was able to connect. However, I can't get a connection from home in Craighall as there is virtually no signal. We verified that my street is on the coverage map at the Telkom Direct store before I purchased my data bundle and in fact the entire area within a 2 KM radius from my complex is unambiguously in 8ta's mobile broadband network coverage area.

What is one to do? I purchased this data bundle last week (which means I've lost a week of access time) and had to spend 3-4 days trying to chase down an 8ta modem and now this connectivity issue! I'd appreciate it if someone from 8ta's tech support team looked into this.

Thanks.

Usual advice on the forum is to buy prepaid SIM R1 (no airtime), provision it to non-roaming and test connection on your location to 8ta web site (free). As you are here I assume you know it it already, do you?

I wanted to thank everyone for their advice. My 8ta mobile broadband access is now consistently good and I think the 2 GB + 1 prepaid bundle is a great deal!

We were all puzzled by the lack of a signal because I'm close to a major shopping mall which has an 8ta tower. An 8ta tech support person came over and walked around the perimeter of my apartment, laptop in hand, to test signal strength in various parts of the apartment. It turned out that I had a signal but only at my living room window because a tall building behind my complex blocks the signal from one side of the apartment. The fix for this was to use a USB extension cable (Belkin cable purchased at Game) to attach my dongle to the window frame using Pritt Stick (the sticky stuff which is not glue). My signal has been consistently strong since!

I recently recharged my 2 GB + 1 GB data bundle in less than 5 mins without needing to go to a store because I bought my prepaid airtime online through a bank (I think most of the major banks recently started providing this option for the major cellular providers and its complementary). I then used the 8ta dashboard to convert the air time to a data bundle. How cool is that?! If you are in a neighborhood with a strong 8ta signal these data deals are great value for money

It should be in sticky 8ta section, is not.
Try smtp.saix.net - works here.
