iPhone 5 prices in South Africa compared

I am probably getting flamed, but what the heck.

What's the issue here? Paying R10K for a stupid phone that will be replaced by a new version in 6 months.

Clearly people in these wealthy provinces earn too much. My salary per month isn't even a droplet of this bloody phone's cost. Yet people buy it, live large and spend large.

It's sad man.

Thats consumerism I am afraid.

You shouldnt get flamed because you arent picking on a brand or ecosystem.
If you had said Apple/Android sucks and Android/Apple rule then you would have caught it

Your are saying that paying a lot of money for any phone is stupid.
If your monthly slaary is well below the phone cost then I agree its dumb to buy one even on a contract.

I am probably a lot older than you and it isnt an issue for me. No debt needed.
However back in the day there is no way I would have spent a months salary (let alone more) on anything that would just be consumed in 1-2 years

@teraside
It should be noted that this is not a phone, but a sophisticated miniature computer that also happens to have phone capabilities.
Hence it's price.

Cool. Thanks for the

Only thing I've done on IOS was to connect to a Wifi network.

I've done a Samsung Galaxy Tab's firmware and hard reset quite a few Androids this year (clients locked themselves out).
I own a Blackberry purely because I can afford it and communication is cheap with those I love.

I guess I can't wrap it around my mind that I'd spend this much on a device :p

Vodacom must be hurting by now from having their azzes kicked by CellC continuously.

And some!! Cell C deals are really epic when you start adding OOB side for talk and data.

Actually the iPhone 5 16GB on Cell C works out to R4700 odd which is less than any of the other decent smartphones on the market (S3, Razr, etc). As noted above, its not a phone, rather a lightweight computing device and thus you need to look at pricing from this angle. It is not far off an Atom notebook, except it is MUCH smaller and has all kinds of wireless services built in (3G, GSM, etc). To sidetrack the thread think of the Ubuntu development where you plug your phone in to a monitor and get a full desktop. This phone is more powerful than some old desktops I have at home!

It's so easy to be hooked into the rat race of these expensive toys. We all like them and would want to lay hands on them, but seriously, senity needs to prevail sometimes.

All good and well, we have 4 operators offering the iPhone, but what does it mean to the operators? If you want to know, check this out: http://www.strandreports.com/sw3501.asp

That seems to be based on US/Europe operators, how relevant is all that really for SA ? I'm not sure how much of a "partnership" Apple has with SA Operators directly? I don't think it's the same as in the USA .

Am going to be abusing the CellC contract for the 16gb since I'm due for an upgrade.

Had a look at VC and MTN and they were just so far out of the ballpark it was ridiculous.

The real issue here is, this phone is almost a YEAR old already and the price is still pretty much launch pricing?
