MDMA [does Connection Management & USSD & Monitors Signal Strength - Windows]

#1 Any reason my K4201-Z just shows "detecting mobile data device"
MDMA doesn't know how to automatically detect your modem. You can specify the port and command set on the command line and probably be able to at least get basic functionality; signal strength, USSD, etc.
#2 Any way I can see my mobile number ? (Work supplied us with SIM and modem - but numbers are no longer preallocated ?)
Which network? Most of them have a USSD code for this.

Hello.

Great software, but i do have one problem.

Cell broadcast/Cell info does not seem to work.
What channel is the software listening on?

Im using a Huawei E3276 modem.

The providers here are showing cell tower name here, but i dont see anything in MDMA.

Regards
Brian

Hi.

Your correct that the cell names are only sent on GSM/EDGE, but MDMA dont show anything on GSM/EDGE.
On my cellphone i see the names, when i activate cell broadcast on it. I believe its on channel 50.

Brian

I can't recall if the E3276 supports CBM.

Is this with the same SIM card? I recall a user with a dedicated data SIM was unable to receive any CBMs. They must have been blocked by the network operator.

Cell information broadcasts are normally on channel 50, except some network operators in South Africa have hijacked that channel to advertise discount rates and relocated the cell information to channel 60 (Vodacom) or channel 250 (MTN).

I don't know if E3276 support CBM. Not sure where to see that.

I tried to switch simcards. They are both voice+data. I also tried another simcard.
All 3 cards works with CBM in my old Nokia phone, but none work with CBM in the E3276.
It seems its channel50 they use for tower name here.

Full modem name is E3276s-150
Hardware CH1E3276SM
Firmware 21.260.05.00.00

So i got a wfi/3g/4g huawei E5776.
it has a hi-link interface but unlike other hilink i seen also a com port but when i start MDMA it just "resets" the modem back to factory defaults.
mdma gives a short glimse of signal and network but to short to be of any use when trying to find the sweet spot of my antenna. im guessing mdma has some command at start that this modem handels diffrently and just resets to factory.
i would be happy for any suggetions. only other dong i got has hi-link and no comport a E3131 i think it was pesky thing.

Known problem no resolve yet. Sometimes MDMA works fine for me but mostly resets the modem. I use 3GModemConnectbeta.exe for testing and setting up the sweet spot for now.

How accurate is the data counter in mdma because lately there's been a discrepancy whith it and afrihosts clientzone.
The upload amount lines up pretty well with afrihost clientzone but the download is almost 100 meg more on clientzone.

I use a dongle and only my pc.

MDMA simply tallies the data reported by Huawei's internal data counter.

There was an issue a long time ago with E620 and E220 modems when the connection was dropped because of poor signal and the new session starts off with the previous session's totals. MDMA tries to detect this situation and reset the counters when this happens.
Sajunky reported a problem recently with an E367 with the counters over-reading when the connections is suspended and resumed also in poor signal conditions.
In both of the above cases, I would expect both upload and download counters to over-read (i.e. MDMA will show more data than your ISP).

One possible cause for your ISP to report higher downloads than reported locally is dropped packets.
If the base station sends you packets that you do not receive, you will still be billed for them.

Thanks for the response. surely I would of noticed 100 megs of droped packets ? my latency was good in WoW it hovered around 230 ms and 270ms not bad for a european server. I've never had an issue with dropped packets when I run pingtest but then again that test only lasts a minute or so. The last couple of sessions I've had have been much longer more like 15 hours. Is it possible that I could loose a 100 megs of data in that time due to dropped packets ?

Do you use RAS modem or NDIS mode? (default in the latest versions). What is modem model?
I have experienced problems only in NDIS mode. And YES, as ginggs pointed out, it would affect both download and upload figures. However as download figures are much significant, it can be still the case.

My modem is a Huawei E 2010.How do you see if you using RAS or NDIS mode ?
Is there a utility I could download that would check if I'm getting packet loss while I'm connected?

For RAS you have in Windows dial-up connection, double click - it dials. Second mouse button - properties, you can see which modem device is associated with connection. For NDIS it looks like LAN connection, it indicates cable disconnected if there is no connection, but you can't dial by double click.

MDMA has device info button, what it says?

I use a dial up connection.

The weird thing for me is mdma and the Afrihost clientzone reading always use to line up quite closely. In this week though it hasn't, on average this week mdma would report that I've used about 190 meg combined a day and clientzone would be about a 100 megs more like 280 megs but the upload readings are similar.

According to reports, the E2010 does support NDIS mode.
Unless overridden by a command line switch, MDMA will prefer to use NDIS mode over RAS mode.
I think the only sure way to tell which one you are using is to check the output of 'ipconfig /all'.

Wireshark might be able to do this. It will definitely show you sent packets that were dropped, not sure if it can know about packets that were never received.

Hey, i downloaded the MDMA but it can never detect my device? im using the vodocom K3770 modem into my laptop running Window 8. anything i am doing wrong or is the software not compatible with this modem? Thanks

Do you have the vodacom dash software installed ? You need to close it. look for the vtray.exe in task manager
