Good morning..

While I was reading some CW feedback I wanted to ask you @Crystal Web. This fiber to home is good and well (great speeds and pings) Is all good. But (this is not a bashing ISP thing) How are the isp going to provide a service to fibre ? Its already way faster then DSL and if I am correct we going to see people download 500GB + easy with that speed, It still usages the same backbone? right so . How can one provide a 1Gbps connection with uncapped?

We already can really provide a 4mb true uncapped but what will happen to fiber. Same uncapped rules going to apply? or is the prices going to be higher because you can kinda cut out telkom line rental out of it.

Basically what I am asking is will you pay more for fibre to get better uncapped or will we see much higher prices ?

like pmR799 (1Gbps with uncapped data)

That is almost a 4mb line with mweb prem/telkom price everything included..

I am just worried that we will have fiber and all that with great speeds and still we get throttled hard

The only reason I came here to ask is.. you are the only guy that I can think of that will give me a straight answer without any bs marketing story

To be honest, I'm not sold on this being a sustainable offering just yet. I know it's a word people hate to hear, but it's the reality. Talking behind the scenes and tried to communicate with their CEO as he suggested we work together, but awaiting a response for 2 weeks now.

Why it is cheaper than other traditional offerings is because there is no IPC cost involved. So you only have to pay for the international breakout portion and ordinary ISP costs, as well as recovering the cost of infrastructure investment into the last mile network, or paying for access on it. This is much, much cheaper than ADSL using Telkom's IPConnect product to provision access over the national last mile network. You should however be aware that it's not 1Gbps uncapped. It's 1Gbps local (and I highly doubt they have a robust interconnect network yet, so it will pretty much all move over the internet breakout pipe instead) - it is really a 10Mbps service marketed as 1Gbps. Which in essence is what every ISP is selling - these fast connections will hit contention problems quicker than slower ADSL networks do. While it's not a big deal to offer some super local speeds, we don't have all that much local hosting of big data - so the real value driver for these sorts of offerings is what international and off-network local capacity exists. That will determine the quality of the network performance for everyone. And is it open access? Month to month? Is the provisioning up to scratch? Lots of other questions need to be answered.

What we see, is a price-war. That is absurd - the input costs are fixed and similar for all ISPs. So all you'll see from a price-war is value erosion to the end user. At the end of the day, the projects and businesses need to remain sustainable, lest you end up with unlit fibre to your home sitting waiting for auction by the liquidators of a now defunct ISP who tried to under-cut on price. There's no need for a price-war. Fibre is relatively cheap, and will erode the ADSL market organically. What's needed are big infrastructure budgets, if anyone wants to truly make waves. Not erosion of value to the end user for the sake of calling it cheap. You get what you pay for.

On that - is the SA infrastructure ready to cope with 10Mbps - 1Gbps upload speeds? Or does direction of allocated bandwidth not really matter in this case? I'm not experienced at all with that

Z

On the Telkom network - not quite yet, until the upgrades on Telkom's network are complete, and then only in some areas. I can understand their need to limit upload speeds somewhat. When it comes to backhauling directly into a DC, and ISPs interconnecting and provisioning bandwidth over their backbone, the upload and download don't matter. Although the higher the upload, the higher risk of greater average Mbps usage per account. Usually ISP's traffic shapers don't shape the upload side on the ADSL network, so you simply need to reconfigure your shaper for these products only, to "manage" the upload queues correctly, or you will end up with massive congestion as contentions go through the roof.

@CW you have a PM sir.

Also I think your network will get a bit busier over the next week considering the GTA5 50GB-60GB preload starts tomorrow.

Already replied.

Oh, and also provisioned additional capacity for the gaming updates as well. We really are always looking ahead to keep you guys happy. ;)

Any chance of a capped account less than 120GB? Say for example 60GB+Free?
Currently on a 50GB package and don't even burn through that...but @ R395 for the 120GB+Free, as much as I'd like to switch over, that prices me out :(

Oh and what exactly is in the free part? 00:00 to 6am or?

We will be releasing smaller packages, yes. In the interim just hop over to our website and talk to an agent on live chat. It's a good way to experience the quality of our support and sales structures, and the guys can also arrange the most suitable product for your needs. :)

And yes, the free data is apportioned for use between midnight and 6am on capped.

Will chat to one after work thanks! So they would be able to tailor a capped product for my usage? Or is that rigid to existing products. Twitch and gaming is all I care for, right now I can do no twitch and barely gaming. Vox has gone to total rubbish...

They will be rigid in terms of what we have created as existing products on our backend. Twitch and gaming? You should be happy with us. :)

You guys could start a very interesting marketing strat for the local (and massive) ZA CS community. Lately everyone on Afrihost and Web Africa have been looking for a new ISP..

hint, join the Facebook group and get going.

Legends :D

Was coming here to apologise for what was to come with the estimated 65gb GTA download...

Doesn't mean it's not going to annihilate the network though - just we've taken some steps to mitigate this. :D

Hehehe, I can appreciate that.
For what it's worth, I'll be trying to stagger the download over a week. I don't leave my PC on overnight very often.
