Just received the following SMS from Telkom:

Dear valued customer, Telkom will contact you in the next few days regarding a free service that will ensure your internet remains connected at all times.
Telkom Team.

... anyone know what they're on about

3m x 1m 5mm thick steel plates supplied to lay over your underground phone line to prevent it being dug up and stolen. Installation, however, is for your own account.

Update:

Seems you can get something for nowt from Telkom these days :)

Telkom are going to deliver a free WiFi router & sim linked to my existing 10MB uncapped account - no contracts or debit orders.

FUP on ADSL line is unchanged, FUP on LTE limited to 5GB peak & 5GB Nightsurfer. Both can be used at the same time.

Promo is valid until March 2016 when it will be reviewed.

... reason for offer? - they note I had a problem recently on my ADSL line for which several faults were placed. Actually the problem was with incoming calls only, ADSL was fine.

Congrats on being part of the program.

Keep us updated on how it goes.

I got this message:

" Telkom is bringing the heat. SA's most unlimited network will change the way you connect this summer. Watch this space."

Probably nothing big on my side.

Got the same SMS.

It's not the same as the Data Wallet SMS.

Update:

Telkom/TI finally got around to activating my SIM, guess the public holiday and weekend played havoc with their "activated within 48hrs" estimate.

Set up is straight forward and I'm currently connected on a single linux PC via USB ethernet to post this. The main network is still chugging away happily on the same 10MB uncapped account.

Speedtests for the D-Link DWR-730 below:

I'll test the WiFi later when I find time but so far it all looks good :)

Are they limiting the LTE DL rate to 10Mbps?

iirc you are very close to a tower.

I queried this with Charl of TelkomZA and after some digging he came up with the following:

As per feedback speed not limited to the service speed, only limited by the mobile network throughput.

"Throughput is limited to the mobile limit of the connection as ADSL is not used when using the SIM option.
So if a person has a LTE connection @ say 25Mbps that is what he will get; needless to say the faster the connection the quicker the data allowance will be depleted with continuous downloads."

I also asked Charles how to get this? Went to Telkom Direct store and they told me they have the sims but they cannot activate it yet?
