This service can not be converted to 10Mbps Fastest DSL at this stage. Please check again in future as we are continually upgrading the network

:-(

But I was not expecting it, as I cant even sync at 4 Meg.. I have to sync at 3 Meg. I can get my line to sync at 4 meg but it very unstable.

Telkom ADSL upgrade tool is not fully functional

I have been testing my line upgrade possibility with the that tool since last week Sat (14th, August), i eventually phoned telkom and they confirmed that i will be upgraded as my exchange supports the upgrade, they could not confirm when though. However all of this despite the fact that the tool (ADSL checker link) says i am not capable of receiving an upgrade.

I am convinced that the tool is not accurate!

I am in the Pretoria- Faerie glen region. (older part of faerie glen.)
Does anyone know if i can believe telkom ? or have any more info on Faerie glen, close to old farm..??

STILL NO UPGRADE!

Thanks!

I agree, the tool's database is clearly not up to date.

I was upgraded on the weekend they started - Waterkloof, code 012 346 xxxx. Now your telephone code is only an indication of the telephone exchange building where the DSLAMs are located. The phone number itself has nothing at all to do with the ADSL service other than this.

When your phone line enters the exchange building, it is split into voice and data - the reverse of the splitter in your home. The voice line goes to an exchange concentrator which has the dialling code asociated with it. Thesere could be several concentrators with different codes in the building. So for Waterkloof you have 012 346 xxxx, 012 460 xxxx, etc.

The data line goes to one of possibly many DSLAMs of varying capabilities. But if there is Metro Ethernet connecting any of these DSLAMs to Telkom's IP network, then a minimum of 8 Mbit/s will be possible. (8 Mbit/s is the maximum speed of the original ADSL standard). And any telephone line going into that building could be capable of being upgraded, as it could be cross-connected to any DSLAM port in that building.

So the Telkom availability checker is only a database of exchange buildings with Metro Ethernet installed, and the exchange codes of the concentrators in those buildings. The most likely ones will be where there are many big businesses or government departments in the area. (SARS head ofiice is just down the road from Watekloof exchange).

But, where it fails is illustrated by this example: Waterlkoof 012 346 xxxx shows as supporting 10 Mbit/s ADSL, but Waterkloof 012 460 xxxx shows "This service can not be converted to 10Mbps Fastest DSL at this stage".

Of course, the implementation of number portability would complicate this considerably!

Parow - 10Mb OK

Since I am 4.7Km from the exchange (Plattekloof II) and the attenuation is very high my download speed did not change from before, that is 3Mb! The upload went from 500kb to 700kb. Obviously the only Telkom box in the area without a DSLAM, is mine. I have ask them 2-3 times to put a DSLAM on the street but they won't. What is even more frustrating is that a friend 200m away is on a DSLAM and syncs perfectly @ 10Mb., you must be 5Km or more from the exchange for them to CONSIDER putting a DSLAM. It is quiet ridiculous that if I want a good line I have to sell the house and move one or two street away!

011 622 Bedfordview - No.

We fall under the Kensington exchange, and apparently it has no 10 mb capability according to the telkom adsl call center.

This is strange cause I assume it being a fairly wealthy area, there would be many people on 4mb.

Tested:

Centurion - No 10 Mbps

Northcliff - Supports 10 Mbps

Fourways - No 10 Mbps

Midstream Estates - No 10 Mbps

Moreleta Park - No 10 Mbps

Garsfontein - No 10 Mbps

Both Centurion and Midstream have brand new developments. They should have the latest exchanges. Why no 10 Mbps?

Neither in Amanzimtoti or on 031 903 exchange....

Interesting though, I only got ADSL a week ago at home.

Telkom informed me that I would not be able to do anything but 384. Most interesting, as I configured my router (being a Telkom self install) I noticed sync at 1024000 down and 512000 up. Could not do any HTTP browsing, yet mail went through without any errors.

Finally found out that I had to accept the T&C on www.telkom.co.za/verifydsl whereby my sync rate changed to the allocated 384000 down and 128000 up.

Phoned Telkom to query the option whether I could "trail run" 512, which only got the reply of not possible ...

Or get your friend to order another line (under your name, but his address), you pay for it, and then set up a wireless link or trench the cable ;)

Also in Centurion. Called 0800375375 yesterday. They confirmed that my exchange is capable of 10M and that they did a successful trial last weekend.
But couldn't tell me when my line may be upgraded.

That stupid tool however predictably says no 10M available.

So reading between the lines, it seems as if they are only doing trials from the various exchanges at this stage. This would be consistent with the numerous reports on this forum of some people on the same exchange being upgraded and others not.

It would be nice if Telkom could get their heads out of their A$$es and just communicate - a contradiction in terms I suppose.

011 828 Sunnyridge - Supports 10 Mbps

telkom10mb.png

Durbanville - supports 10mbits, however was syncing at 4 until I phoned Telkom and got them to do a reset on their side.

Durban - Montclair/yellowood park- no upgrade at this stage according to the checker

FYI had to have them sync me down to 8mbits due to constant disconnects.
