Telkom ADSL upgrade tool is not fully functional
I have been testing my line upgrade possibility with the that tool since last week Sat (14th, August), i eventually phoned telkom and they confirmed that i will be upgraded as my exchange supports the upgrade, they could not confirm when though. However all of this despite the fact that the tool (ADSL checker link) says i am not capable of receiving an upgrade.
I am convinced that the tool is not accurate!
I am in the Pretoria- Faerie glen region. (older part of faerie glen.)
Does anyone know if i can believe telkom ? or have any more info on Faerie glen, close to old farm..??
STILL NO UPGRADE!
Thanks!
I agree, the tool's database is clearly not up to date.
I was upgraded on the weekend they started - Waterkloof, code 012 346 xxxx. Now your telephone code is only an indication of the telephone exchange building where the DSLAMs are located. The phone number itself has nothing at all to do with the ADSL service other than this.
When your phone line enters the exchange building, it is split into voice and data - the reverse of the splitter in your home. The voice line goes to an exchange concentrator which has the dialling code asociated with it. Thesere could be several concentrators with different codes in the building. So for Waterkloof you have 012 346 xxxx, 012 460 xxxx, etc.
The data line goes to one of possibly many DSLAMs of varying capabilities. But if there is Metro Ethernet connecting any of these DSLAMs to Telkom's IP network, then a minimum of 8 Mbit/s will be possible. (8 Mbit/s is the maximum speed of the original ADSL standard). And any telephone line going into that building could be capable of being upgraded, as it could be cross-connected to any DSLAM port in that building.
So the Telkom availability checker is only a database of exchange buildings with Metro Ethernet installed, and the exchange codes of the concentrators in those buildings. The most likely ones will be where there are many big businesses or government departments in the area. (SARS head ofiice is just down the road from Watekloof exchange).
But, where it fails is illustrated by this example: Waterlkoof 012 346 xxxx shows as supporting 10 Mbit/s ADSL, but Waterkloof 012 460 xxxx shows "This service can not be converted to 10Mbps Fastest DSL at this stage".
Of course, the implementation of number portability would complicate this considerably!
