Hi,

Can somebody from Vodacom give me the all criteria Vodacom uses to detemine the viabilty of a 3G network in a specific area?

The reason to this question is an area called Jacobsdal/Modderrivier in the Northern Cape which is a booming farming and town community. I get numerous calls from the community regarding bandwidth issues. The area is covered with an adequate Edge service but lots of clients complain of slow data throughput.

Regards

Welcome to MyBroadband :).

You have already answered your own question - see highlighted part of your post above.

Telkodemonopolies is to blame for the lack of bandwidth throughout SA - your town is no exception.

It's typically a question of economics together with the availability of sites, backhaul, etc.

So there might not be enough usage in your area to warrant a 3G tower (they're hellishly expensive) or as ic indicated, getting more backhaul to the area might be problematic.

I'll ask.

Thanks, 3G, for the reply.

I have heard the set-up of such facility is > R1000000. To recover that type of money, you will have to have a worthwhile clientbase to recover the expenses. Everything boils down to money.

I am awaiting your reply regarding the criteria.

Well, the business case plus availability of resources are the criteria.

But I'll check which one is the culprit here. But if you have good EDGE coverage and low throughputs, it's clearly a backhaul issue.
