3G on Virgin - SOON!!!

Also no 3G on Virgin in Cape Town for me. Tried all various APN settings and can only get EDGE. Works fine with my Cell C sim card in my phone (HTC Legend) - very good signal etc.

Maybe it's a Cape Town problem?

It looks like CellC refuse connection to their 3G tower when using Virgin prepaid card. It accepts 2G connection. Switchng to the CellC SIM card - it accepts 3G connection and speed is good.

Tested yesterday with 900MHz UMTS modem (Vodafone K3565) set to 3G only.

I'm using the HSPA+ network now and will make a video with speedtests on my phone to prove it.

In Gauteng we haven't got CelC official launch yet. I will check again after 17th. So far no 3G for Virgin yet.

Try your virgin sim out now, they say the network is open

When i set my phone to UMTS only and scan I only get VodaCom and MTN. I presume thats why I cant use it. My area (Durbanville, Vierlanden) doesnt have coverage.

Well seems Cell C has got their HSPA+ network up and going in Gauteng now.. So things looking good for them

I just signed up with Virgin Mobile today. Playing around with the Galaxy S but I cant get 3G. Downloads an webpages load slow at 5KB/s and also time out sometimes. Are there any internet settings I could try changing to enable 3G? Everything is still stock standard.

Welcome to the club. Had my galaxy s for 4 months and have had to deal with these issues ever since. Nothing you can do but wait or hope for 3G. You have no idea how fed up I am with their network hut luckily my contract runs out this month. Good luck, you're stuck for 2 years... Android + virgin without 3G is unbearable. It almost drives me insane, forget about Google maps or any other live services. Internet doesn't load fast enough or not at all

Managed to download a 100mb file yesterday so it's not as bad as I originally thought. Speeds sometimes shoot up to 30KB/s. Hint to all: If you want to download a large file use a download manager and try and download from a website that allows you to resume downloads.
It's ok for browsing and at 60c per mb I dont need to worry about buying a data bundle. Can just use the allocated airitme.

you would save buying data bundles from Cell C

I'm waiting for Virgin to sell bundles. Then can use the R300 allocated to buy bundles. No need to spend more.
With the CellC activechat package for R280pm you get 100 minutes and 500mb data. Good value but not so much flexibility. I will use more than 500mb data so will need to spend more to buy a bundle. I'd rather they give me R280 to spend on voice or data.

CellC locked Virgin users off the *147# too.
Think Virgin also need a redo, I see the Gateway shop is going though something. They did say that would offer something. If they can charge it's customer's 60c per mb and CellC lowed its prices so uhm

So Virgin still have no 3G network? Must be hurting their business quite a bit. It is the only reason I will not use their network - no 3g.

Cell C - here I come. :)

I really, truthfully pray you sent in a faxed document stating you want to cancel your contract with Virgin.. like 2 months ago..
I called them to cancel my contract on 123, and it took 10 months to get my contract cancelled. With numerous hellopeter.com complaints. Good luck getting out of that rut.

Oh, and be careful if you want to port your number to another Service Provider. If you are on contract, the other providers cant port your number. And virgin will make sure that even if you are paying pre-paid airtime, that your number will still appear as a contract number
