Hey guys. I'm relatively new to the forums. but been reading it for a while.

I was wondering, I currently have a 384 line and if my father starts going on Skype my ping on bf2142 shoots up to 500ms. i was wondering if a 4mb line would improve this. or just so that i ping 100ms or so while he is online and the normal for a 4mb line when he is not

And also, is www.isat.co.za any good, cause i was thinking of getting a line from them and then axxess as my isp

Thanks.

A 4MB line may improve ping times; depending on the circumstances. Ping measures the time it takes to send a unit of data from your PC to a server and back (measured in ms). Throughput is the amount of data that can be sent in a particular period of time (measured in kb/s).

If the Skype connection is causing your connection to reach its limit of 384kbps, then your system will queue requests and your ping times will increase.... One way to solve it is to increase the throughput (upgrade to 4mbps), the other way is to reduce the traffic, i.e. limit the Skype connection to 128kbps ;)

If you limit the trafic for skype it'll start dropping packets and deteriorate the skype calls, which is not a sollution.

Upgrading to 4mb would most likely not resolve your latency issue but would definately improve it drastically as skype would no longer be saturating the line.

Yeah well I used to have 384 and when i played games and someone used skype at the same time then pings would rise a lot, but with 4mbit you shouldn't ever feel spyking on the line.
if the server is hosted local then ping time should improve but international no soo much.

Skype v4.1 has multiple codecs. If the connection is adequate, it uses a codec that eats more bandwidth and has clearer call quality. If you limit skype's bandwidth (with a tool like NetLimiter) you can force it to use one of the lower-bitrate codecs (it switches automatically), or you could also just downgrade to an older version of skype such as skype v2. that might help as a last resort if you can't upgrade your line

I have a 384kb line and skype and play at the same time but then again the game I play is dota on a local server check your line speed at www.speedtest.com and if its a bit low complain to telkom N.B. your speed should constantly be below 300 kb/s for them to consider fixing your line also be sure nothing else is using your line

p.s. I got a constant 320 kb/s or there about :p maybe I am lucky

Thanks for all the quick replies. it really answers my questions. so guess who's getting a 4mbps line the end of the month. just hope i connect fast at like 3mbps or 4mbps and not 1mbps or 2mbps. the exchange is in Pietersburg and i'm in warmbaths.... luckily my cable is already fiber optic and not just copper. :D

this is to all the smart people out there. maybe if somebody can confirm if i can connect at full 4mbps. according to posts on this forum i'm suppose to be able to connect at 3.5mbps to full 4mbps. if there is a gaming god i think my prayers have just been answered. oh yeah and where is my exchange? is it at the post office or at the telkom building or where? if anybody has been to warmbaths you'll know what im talking about.
