I switched to Telegram and got the people I chat with most on it too! The single greatest pro of Telegram over WhatsApp is that I can install it on my phone, tablet, Linux PC and Windows Laptop and the messages will sync across all devices. Meaning I can pick up any device and continue chatting away. :)

EDIT: You can install it on a Chromebook too if you happen to have one.

Oh wow, I did not know this. Having a multi-platform IM (non Hangouts) is game changing!! Funny that it still does the cell number auth but simply ties your tablet as a second device to your cell. I wonder why Whatsapp could never do this?

Telegram is headquartered in Berlin, and developers made it clear that the app is in no way linked to Russia. I suspect the developers trying to distance themselves and their app from Russia.
There are many software packages developed by Russian and marketed by EU based companies. Reason is that Russia didn't sign international copyright law. In result, if developers want to be protected from piracy on the west, they can't be based in Russia.
And yes, I don't worry about Russian govt, they had been ruled out, I would rather be concerned about China govt (and Naspers shares) in the case of WeChat.

I must be getting old, I've got Skype, Viber, Whatsapp and BBM installed, I think I have used Whatsapp once in the last 2 years and I have yet to use any of the others.

Most people I know seem to be on iMessage (and even governments can't break that encryption ;)) or I just use SMS text messages (I get 5000 free per month).

I've used GTalk for many years, as did most of my primary contacts. When Hangouts was "forced" on us (yes, I use a rooted phone so I can get back to Gtalk but most people won't even dream of rooting their phones!) it took only weeks for most to abandon Hangouts. I liked the multi-platform capabilities of GTalk and the ability to have two accounts on one device, however Hangouts made everyone jump ship. I don't see anyone going back anytime soon. I don't have a FB account, neither many of my contacts. The moment FB requires me to "integrate" my FB and Whatsapp accounts I will jump ship.
I uninstalled all Hangout updates (to get the Disable button showing) and end up with a Google Talk icon. I did not open it, but it look like you can get back to it.

Edit: in the Application Manager

I know if you install the latest version of Android you're stuck with Hangouts unless you root your device.

Yes.

The Russian developers also mentioned that one of the main reasons behind Telegram is to actually get privacy from the Russian government and its agencies. The developers might be Russian, but I think they are part of the good guys.

LOL. When I get an SMS, its usually a bank or something.

I'll just continue using WhatsApp, as will everyone I know.

Out of interest - do you guys use Facebook?

OMG. Now that is a big waste of time.

I am using Whatsapp and Telegram. Daily I have one or 2 new contacts joining, so slowly getting there. If a contact is on Telegram I use that, else I use Whatsapp.

My interest was to see if the guys that don't mind Whatsapp have FaceBook. It's reasonable to assume if people already use FaceBook, they have accepted the privacy issues and hence aren't fazed by the Whatsapp takeover.

Same. WhatsApp is pretty much now only to receive messages from acquaintances / clients.

All my friends are on Telegram.

Yep, I use it.

I have no problem with them owning WhatsApp, and frankly, I still don't see what the issue is for those threatening to jump ship to something else.

The new hangouts on ios is a huge update. iOS7-theme and animated stickers are excellent. Seems much faster too.

My whatsapp messages to certain contacts now take days to go through... Sigh

Sadly my contacts want to continue using whatsapp

It could be a reason, but most of users come from Arab countries, not Russia. A reason is probably focus on security. It has secure chat feature which is peer to peer (not leaving any track on the server). Some people are very concern about CIA spying. Now some business people ralised that they are being spied and American companies benefit of this. They will use Telegram or similiar solutions to protect their business. Email is not good at all.

I'd blame connectivity or hardware rather than WhatsApp. I'm yet to encounter any problems.
