So it seems like FNB or Capitec is the way to go.

I'm surprised it's taken so long for people to start moving over. If we started doing this a while back, we could have stimulated competition a lot sooner. FNB have offered free internet banking, notifications and flat rate accounts (where almost everything is free) since I joined them 6 years back.

I think the biggest problem is bonds. Most banks require or at least "prefer" that your salary comes into an account with them if your bond is with them and most people don't move because of it. I moved from Nedbank to FNB when Nedbanks charges got stupid and they actually went and reduced their charges, particularly on "entry level" type stuff a bit since then. FNB used to provide extremely good value but it seems their charges also keep climbing and climbing. Because the service is generally pretty good to excellent I stick with them though, sounds like charges are more hectic elsewhere.

Well Standard Bank charges 30c per email notification...it may be more now. Hell they charge R90 to cancel a debit order or cheque and they charge R115 for a bounced debit order. If that isn't daylight robbery I don't know what is.

How is this legal?

Some poor guy in the street gets hauled off to jail for stealing a couple bucks. A corporation steals probably billions of rands all told and there is nothing. South Africans shrug their shoulders and carry on.

agree 100%
what to do

GREED
money must fill their coffers no matter from where n how

When you get a homeloan through ABSA you pay R100 emailing fee as part of you admin costs.

and when u apply ONLINE for a home loan, or any other loan for that matter, and you dont then eventually take it (because they never called u and you went with FNB) you have to go "to your nearest branch" to cancel the application, preventing you from getting any other form of loan until the pending one is cancelled....

really pathetic systems they have in place.

You have to be really thick to still bank with ABSA.

I mean they now introduce this great new product a ridilous fees which other banks like FNB have been offering for years for free.

just for the record, they've had this service for years, people has been paying these amounts for years now. most ppl dont notice the few cents, but say R20 per month from each absa customer? making them a fortune out of ignorant customers... same as Vodacom and their CLIP charge of like R10. why does this still cost money?

Now that's shocking.

I changed to BIDVEST Bank no charge on email notifications the have a cap too on service fees IT R3.00

Moved from ABSA to Investec due to issues like this. Well, this and incompetent staff, high staff turnover which make "personal banking" a farce, etc. Now have one monthly charge no matter what I do, and have a call centre which has never failed to resolve any query straight away.

Banking with ABSA is like playing the lotto - a stupidity tax....

FNB is the best in my opinion, they do how ever rip u a new one for using another banks atm

moved from absa to Capitec because of this sort of thing, but i remember being charged R2 for an sms and R60 for credit card delivery..... told them to keep it and closed all my accounts.

I bank with ABSA and I pay a once a month fee which covers all transactions - apart from money from another banks ATM - and I am very very happy with the service I get from them.
I am from the UK and lived all over Europe and know what a proper bank should do. IMHO no bank in SA comes close to a "proper" bank by virtue they charge for everything.
But all in all - happy with my lot with ABSA.

Which other banks have you tried, and why are they not as good as Absa?

I'll be honest and say I havent banked with any other SA banks as I am happy with what I get from ABSA.
Being a foreigner its difficult to get an account over here that will serve any useful purpose so that has stopped me shopping around. I do hear great things about FNB though.

Seems to contradict your statement though:

:)

ABSA are just common thieves.

The "Full Management Fee" only covers your current account - you'll still pay for notifications on your credit card (which is where most transactions will take place).

I dont  you should have that checked. Any EFT, any debit order, any notification is all free for me

If a company starts charging for emails, i am wondering how bad are they financially that they would need emails to be charged for.. poor ABSA cant even afford to send emails, Thank god i am with FNB
