guys...

I really need some help. I have line rental and Wifi from a Netgear router from Telkom. Initially it was great, I had no issues with it, until I moved. I am a post grad student and spend quite a lot of time on the internet with research. I also watch movies and series online. Currently the service is so poor, I am even struggling to open emails from my gmail accounts. Articles and pdf files that I need to download is ridiculously poor and takes almost a whole day. Telkom suggest that i use the speed test and it showed that the line is working. Then they said that the problem is with my devices. If i move the Wifi option off on my phone it works perfectly, when I take my laptop to work and connect it with the Wifi there it works well too. Which means there's something wrong with my line, right? Telkom insist the problem isn't on their side or their service. So I have decided to cancel them.
Can someone please give me some idea of what is the best company to use for home internet?
Thanx in advance

Sounds like you have congestion on the exchange which can only be fixed if they upgrade it.

What happens when you use a cabled ethernet connection?

What are your router snr & attenuation stats?

Good Morning Rainbowmd, why not test with an alternate account to ensure that the problem is not line or exchange related.

We offer FREE Trial accounts, have a look at the following link ;)

Guys are throwing trial accounts at you - try them out chap

It sounds to me more like he's experiencing Telkom throttling at work.
Get a Afrihost or similar free trial and test the performance compared to Telkom.

If its throttling he must have downloaded a lot to get it there

Actually that's not the case.
Telkom are very vague regarding these throttle /shaping levels.
When I was with Telkom they changed the FUP so many times you actually never knew where you stood.
Once month I could get 350Gb on a 2Mb uncapped, the next month I couldn't even manage 150Gb on a 4Mb line.
And it wasn't only me, most of the customers noticed the same thing and the entire time Telkom said it was not on their side and was most likely due to exchange issues or similar causing bad speeds.

It's the age old argument between ISP and user.
You can prove it's not exchange related yet the ISP is adamant it is.

Seems it might be WiFi related.

Test using ethernet as ponder suggests and if that's OK try setting up the WiFi on different channels to see if things improve - the free android WiFi Analyzer app is a useful tool.

Was thinking of a capped account, but could be uncapped he didn't say which is a pitty.
