ADSL ISP account speeds in SA compared

I expected most of that list. Slightly surprised that G-connect did so well though. Know 3 people who use it and they havent given very favourable reviews of their service.

Also i think the results are an average of all line speeds, not only 4mbs.

No - Only 4 Mbps lines. The other lines will pull the average down a lot...and will not really show best performance...
 
When I completed the survey (MWeb 4Mbps capped) I was experiencing severe degradation of my line due to exchange faults (Clareinch), as well as ISP congestion (backhaul issues).

I think these results do give an interesting 'real-world' summary, but the differences between ISPs are not particularly 'significant' IMO.

Factors such as the time-of-day that the survey was taken, as well as others such as the location of the user, will all skew the results in different ways.

Hmmm.... I would be hesitant to draw such a firm conclusion from the published results. As pointed out above, without confidence intervals (or preferably non-parametric tests), it is difficult to conclude that Web Africa is faster (on international) than GConnect. A more cautious approach would be to say that Web Africa, GConnect and Vodacom Uncapped are probably comparable (on international), and likely to be consistently faster than the next group (which is basically MWEB in three flavours). But even this claim may be overturned if the confidence intervals are very wide .... or if the sample sizes are small.
 
I note that MTN Business does not even appear on either list .... not surprising, as we use them, and our speeds are agonisingly slow
 
Why is AFRIHOST that bad? Almost 1Mbps below its top competitor. Thats dedinitelt NOT ON. Damn - and I have a capped account.

Its time to graze on greener pastures, loyalty not paying off...lol
 
So not one Openweb client did the survey?
I get faster speedtests than the fastest result in that survey, using a standard telkom account. Are you telling me that my result was removed from the results, or are we using averages? If we are using averages, how on early would that make any sense? Who ever had the most 384k users would be the slowest, simply thanks to averages.

Agreed, however you're assuming that the context if my comment is limited to their position in the list.
I believe it's a fair assumption, that given the results of this poll, that their performance really is very good. That's certainly worth my congratulatory remark.

Last stats course I did was about 12 years ago. Maybe I'm still looking for the right problem :P

But seriously, as soon as someone mentions problems of small sample size, unless we have a little more info about the underyling data it becomes very hard to draw reasonable conclusions from the data. Guys get all hot and bothered and off on a tangent when the underlying problem could just be sample error!
 
We cannot even work on our IS line anymore. It is a 4 MB service and if we get 1 MB it is a lot. Not even worth complaining as the number pushers at IS rule. Migrating all our customers away from them.

Forgot to mention as well that they are still the most expensive.
