ADSL ISP account speeds in SA compared

dam ok then..... what line have you got and where do you work?

When I am in SA, I have the full power of a mighty 384k mweb line at my disposal. And here in NL, I got 90/90mbit fiber at home and a server connected to a gigabit network ;).

I know this is anecdotal, but I use both WA and GConnect, and I find GConnect to be slightly faster with better latencies.

These test results are weird. Our office line performs consistently better on an Afrihost capped account, then a Webafrica capped account. Latency is much better, and we are able to max our 4mbps line out completey (430KBps) when doing downloads. Browsing is also a dream.

As soon as we switch back to WebAfrica, everything slows down to snails pace. Browsing becomes frustratingly slow, and it is impossible to attain full line speed on downloads. We've tested this a number of times, on different days, at different times during the day, and Afrihost kicks WebAfrica's ass.

Anybody else experiencing the same?

Hi iCubed that really should not be the norm, did our engineers investigate this for you? If so, did they manage to find anything? Otherwise would you mind sending me your customer code and some details around the issue so we can investigate this.

And I average around 60kb/s from Rapidshare during the day on weekdays.

On weekends and after hours (starts from around 6pm), the connection goes up to line speed minus overhead, or ~410kb/s average, for all protocols, including Torrents.

IS Uncapped Lite from Openweb. In other words; that article may not be the most accurate representation of what users get, as it doesn't specify a time period, that I could see.

Hi. We have sumbitted a support ticket, and are currently trying to get this sorted out with WebAfrica support. This is an ongoing issue...

Hi Rupert,

I have for the past week gone from loyal Web Africa customer to shopping around for alternatives. International browsing slow, downloads of 4Kb/s, streaming audio from the BBC interrupted and forget Youtube.

We've had no real communication around the core issue only vague at best references to upgrades and patches to world of warcraft (please).

Can you and the Web Africa team please provide some indication of when we can expect service to be restored to the levels Web Africa have previously maintained so well.

Thanks

Mibboy

Hi Mibboy,

We've received positive results today and it looks like the Telkom exchange issues are resolved and the network is looking considerably better. Is this matching your experience? We still also have various improvements planned.

PS. We did also post the following message on our status page and forum on the 16th:

http://forums.webafrica.co.za/showthread.php?4452-Latency-Issues-Official-response

With regards to the latency and speed issues experienced by our ADSL
customers, please see our official response below :

Some feedback on the network speed and latency issues experienced this week.
First off, to clarify this was a result of the following:

1. Packet loss and congestion on Telkom ADSL Exchanges, specifically in the Southern
Suburbs around Cape Town.
2. Increased traffic on our network due to large Microsoft's security updates and Blizzards
5GB update for World of Warcraft.

Despite recent network improvements, this sudden and significant spike in traffic did
impact our network. We have some upgrades and improvements planned for the next
2 weeks, which we are now in the process of implementing.

Thank you to everyone who has given their feedback, as always, it is extremely
useful.

We will continue to provide information as we progress.

Now see here, what we got is a mexican standoff... wrong forum

Ok, but forgive me for being shoopid. *dons tin foil hat* But if the providers were reading this forum, and im sure they do. How do we not know their dirty tricks dept didnt kick into action? Create rules on their network that sites like speedtest and netmetrics get high priority. Im all for a gentlemans game of cricket, but when the lights go off its a knife fight!

Or did the survey test other things aswell not JUST speedtest?

I'm on a Afrihost 50GB capped account on a 4mb/sec telskum line and I consistently get between 3.3mb/sec and 3.5mb/sec irrespective of the time of day. As mentioned before, the distance from the exchange and the quality of the line and exchange have a far greater influence on the download speed than the service provider. I friend of mine about 2km from me is also with Afrihost, but his line had to be downgraded by Telkom to 2mb/s due to the line quality resulting in synch issues at full 4mb/s speeds. Telkom and their infrastructure is the biggest culprit not the sp.
