Afrihost ADSL capacity increase gets delayed

@AH
Can't you draw up some petition for you clients to "sign" and try to increase the pressure on Telkom?

What exactly is needed to complete the IPC upgrades?
Why is it taking 6 months to complete an upgrade?

At the moment we don't have further information regarding the delays imposed by Telkom. If we do receive any further input, we'll definitely share that.

IPC is essentially Telkom's hardware - much like the telephone line in your home actually belongs to Telkom. We are not allowed to alter or directly work with their hardware, we have to wait for the to deliver and install the upgrades.

I understand this as we have touched on this before, but why the long delay?

You have explained that it is almost similar to adding a network card. I assume that it was dumbed down version for me.

Does it involve new cables that must be pulled for a million miles. Must they build Koeberg 2 or a mini international space station?

What does it take to install new IPC?

This is not necessarily aimed at Afriman.
Any one that knows the process can answer.

If I recall correctly - telkom needed an international IPC part (don't know which :D), which they had to wait to arrive in SA - therefore causing the big delay. However, I'm not sure what caused this small delay.

Well it definately can't be that, because up to this morning we were still on track, so they must have this part, right?

As far as I know, it reliant on hardware that Telkom have to order and install on MTN's premises in the data centre that houses the IPC. Once the hardware is setup and functioning, they can plug the hardware into our network and it's essentially live.

I think that is pretty dumbed down though - I think there is a level of complexity on both sides, but that is the basic concept.

Im not looking for a fight/debate with anyone.
I want to understand the process and what went wrong.

Yea, thats what my reasoning is. Thats why I think something else must've happened? Maybe they haven't yet installed the so called "part" onto MTN's network, and it is still with Telkom? :(

I guess we will have to wait until noon on the 18th to find out then if this is going to be installed or stalled once again. It will happen when it happens I guess.

All good to go with no hint of anything amiss, right up until just before the actual announcement of the delay.
<snip> We expect that once capacity lands - we're hoping for early April if all goes well - that many of the symptoms we're seeing in the South will be resolved <snip>

As far as I know this should be in the same time frame as the general upgrade for the South as well. They probably won't arrive on the same day, but hopefully both before Greg's estimated date of the 10th.

Yes, the 10th is the date were working with, until we hear differently from Telkom. We're hoping that there's a chance they may deliver earlier if that's even possible. We're all ready on our side to go live.

No.
I mentioned last week that this was the ETA given to us by Telkom, to be installed by the 10th April 2014.

I'm told that everything is on track for the 10th (tomorrow)

That I couldn't say. From experience, it could be at any time really- depends when the Telkom guys are available.

Unfortunately Telkom informed us around midday that they would not be able to deliver the upgrade today. They saying that it will be done by the 18th of April now :(

Thus, until noon on the 18th I can be assured that I am "getting the best internet experience(TM)" I can be getting and can discuss my feelings about this online.

/too much effort for a meh

/sigh

For sure - hope I didn't give you that impression :)

I don't know why the upgrade didn't go ahead. As far as I know the hardware is not in place or on site, so I don't know if that is the cause of the delay. I know that we've been ready for some time on our side, but there is not much required except to clear rack space and prep our network. Hopefully we might get more info as we get closer to the install date.

Nope not at all. I was still typing while you responded, so it was not in context to what anybody said.

It is just so many of these threads end up in a huge fight, that I just wanted to convey that I'm looking for factual answers too my questions and not trying to start some fight.

That's not the way threads usually go - it's usually due to one or two posters. You can report them to a moderator if you feel it's inappropriate :(
