Afrihost ADSL capacity increase gets delayed

You can't blame Afrihost in this case honestly...

One of the biggest flaws in human nature is tunnel vision, people only see what they want to see. In the case of an ISP, people only see their internet and they believe that it must just work regardless. The philosophy of "I must get what I paid for" cannot be applied to every aspect of the working world.

So I propose that the next time you are going to phone your ISP to complain without being prepared to listen and/or to reason with the consultant who, despite what you believe, has not got a vendetta against you, but is just there to try and help you, just ask yourself "do I TRULY understand just how the internet really works"?

If you could really appreciate the workings of the Internet and appreciate what really happens when you open a page...you will be a lot more sympathetic when your favorite porn site takes longer to load than usual. These systems are fragile and they rely on other systems which in turn rely on others and so forth.

I do know exactly how the Internet works and exactly how these systems communicate with each other, its my job. Even when my LoL ping is 500ms+ and not 190ms, I don't have a rage fit with the consultant over the phone? Why? Because I truly understand the workings of what happens when you perform actions in a game or on a website. If you do too you will be astonished at how all of those operations, how all of those systems interacting with each other, can happen in a fraction of a second...

Bottom line...take the time to look at the problem from another parties perspective.

Yes, much better.

As i've said, we take any actionable and practical feedback back to management for them to consider. I guess they figured that posting a notice for the additional week was do-able. We're glad that this least addresses some of the comments here.

I really appreciate your point of view here, it's always good to see it from the other perspective. Of course, the same holds true for us to see it from our clients perspective.

That's why these forum conversations are so important. I don't believe that we're here to convince each other of things, but to understand each other's perspective and to agree on the values and priorities that are important to all of us.

My 2c :)

Problem is that the other parties do not pay my bill every month.

Just my 2c (actually nowhere near 2c)

As do I - and so what? There's a difference between a ping being high for a couple of hours or a few days, and a ISP blatantly refusing to admit (for months) that there's a problem. There's a problem, when a ISP -knowingly already having problems- provide their customers with free upgrades, there's a problem, when a ISP -already having problems- give away free bandwidth, the list really does goes on.

The tecnical merrits on how or how not a ISP works, has little to do with this. As allot of us said previously, there's piles of other things they could have done (all of which, is technically very feasible).

I am still waiting for Afrihost to take any kind of responsiblity in terms of what is going on here...

I appreciate other peoples opinions just to be clear and I'm not out to shoot anyone's down.

In this case Telkom are the party at fault in my opinion. Again everyone's opinion is different and I'm not out to change anyone's.

Had the IPC upgrades been completed on schedule, we would more than likely not be having this conversation. While I know your initial thought to this opinion would be "had Afrihost not implemented its package deals in the first place we would not be having this conversation either", it will force the hand of other ISP's in South Africa to re-evaluate their offerings.

Who remembers DigiChilli? And Screamer? Does anyone remember how the former blew open the uncapped ADSL market? They forced the hand of other ISP's, notably MWEB who in turn dropped the prices of their offerings. Granted the DigiChilli service wasn't excellent (I've been waiting for my signup confirmation email for the last 5 years) they did have a major effect on the market which benefited all South Africans.

Now Afrihost is larger, they have better infrastructure and better support staff than DigiChilli and most, if not all other ISP's in the market today. These offerings, although affected by unforeseen obstacles, will benefit the market as a whole, they are not going to disappear into oblivion such as DigiChilli and Screamer.

Once the IPC upgrades have been completed, once the issues have been resolved and they do have the best service in South Africa, how will that effect other ISP's? Will they sit back and bleed clients to Afrihost or drop their offerings too? Regardless if people follows these posts or not, they will most likely reap benefits.

Patience...

Looks like we're seeing some improvements, shouldn't be much longer now guys :)
