Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback - 2

Same boat here, although my http traffic is full speed 24/7. I wish Afrihost would find a solution to the congestion issue without "throttling/shaping" the cr@p out of the business account users p2p and nzb traffic. I'm also finding youtube is buffering more & more :(

Streaming shouldn't be affected, however downloads may be degraded.
This isn't permanent though.

If you have any tests results I can look at please PM them to me, I'd like to determine the cause for your slow streaming.

Thanx for info but your website Network Status page show no mention of this "Optimization;Shaping;degrading" issue on p2p traffic on Business accounts. And you have done quite well of not admitting that it is an issue or a problem but instead a new protocol put in place buy Afrihost.

So please confirm if this is in fact a deliberate action by Afrihost or a Technical Issue?

The increase in demand is still posted on our noticeboard.

I.e.

"We are shaping, but this won't be permanent"

This is exactly my argument - You cannot have streaming going at full tilt and downloads being degraded without prioritisation/shaping - it can only happen with rate limiting.

Correct, he is contradicting what he is saying about their optimization policy. If the network is under strain then all services will be affected. You cannot state that Youtube should be running fine (which also downloads huge amounts of data with HD videos) but p2p might be slow due to contention. Everything should be slow then... But hey who am I to say

That's not how a network works.

You have to admire the Afridudes' resolve in sticking with their alternative version of reality. Truly impressive!

Actually you are correct... you are constantly repeating "possibly", "maybe", "should be", "soon"... nothing definite except degraded performance, rubbish throughput, managed, optimised and monitored.

I have this mental image of Gian and the AH staff all in a big hold-hands-huddle praying for demand to ease... and THAT is all that is being done about this.
QFT!

guys i think we beating on the wrong person here..
True that. (I understand the guys are just the faces in the firing line; I just hate the fact that they are trying too hard to Mac Maharaj us!)

I don't think that's fair, we can't downgrade a certain clients experience entirely.
Uncapped accounts are shaped during peak hours in any case.

But it's fair, when I have ZERO throughput on NNTP and P2P, double standards dude, double standards....

That's not how a network works.

Take it from a CCNA as well as CCNP... This *IS* how congestion works. -everything- will deteriorate under congestion.

If you really want to become technical... Whether it's a HTTP download, or a youtube video, the packets will still be broken up to 1500 bytes. It doesn't matter WHAT data is in the packet, a packet, is a packet, and ANY packet will get dropped when there is congestion. Anything you download that is bigger than 1500 bytes, will, and can, potentially be dropped under congestion.

You are shaping - the HTTP download test done over multiple ports as posted by a previous user proves this beyond doubt, seeing that you CANT argue with it, you simply just pull up your shoulders and all of a sudden claim you are no expert?

If you're no expert, then please don't come and try to explain how congestion works. You obviously don't know how that works either.

YOU ARE SHAPING. Finish and klaar. I think we should all be lodging complaints at the ASA and ISPA right about now...

I wonder if AfriGuy realises that many forumites are IT specialists with experience in networking and network protocols???

Just saying...

That is how a network works when you limit (shape) certain parts of it..

I think we've discussed what's happening on the network ad nauseum already.
To summarise:

Downloads may be degraded due to contention.
This is not a permanent experience.
We are constantly running tweaks/ changes to get the best overall experience for all of our clients.

I'll update this thread with further feedback as soon as it's available.
Sorry guys, I can't keep replying to posts asking the same questions :(

Ya well... iOS 8 updates has run it course... new excuse... packet loss due to post office strike... low impact.

AfriGuy/Afrihost, this is now getting ridiculous. It is 10.20pm on a Friday evening and the speeds are abysmal - I am also under half speed (between 2-3.5M) on a 10M Bus account.
Now, I have been very patient these last few weeks, but I am at the point of getting really pissed off.
AfriGuy/Afrihost, please sort your rubbish out, and pronto, otherwise I will also be leaving you.

Ok, the time has come, to bid you adieu, Afrihost ; you guys could not organise a piss-up in a brewery.
It is a sad state of affairs when a company providing a service cannot meet its obligations, has no answer to when its service, which we pay handsomely for, will be restored as advertised (our contractual obligation as users is met every month, but when is your side of the contract going to be fulfilled?)
Even after my PM to you on 3rd October 2014 – see above, I have had no response whatsoever and your service continues to decline with no end in sight.
And please spare me the “we are sorry you feel this way” bull dust; it just does not wash anymore.

What a disgusting excuse for an IP service provider Afrihost is; and I, and all others who have loyally been hanging on for better days; wake up and smell the roses.
Enjoy the fun, boys and girls.

You didn't answer my question? So please confirm if this is in fact a deliberate action by Afrihost or a Technical Issue?

The last issue South ADSL Network Demand was posted 23/09/14 and this "optimization protocol" only hit me personally today. Is this protocol put in place to resolve the above mentioned issue? I don't need to tell you it's created a new one.
