Afrihost Business Uncapped Feedback - 2

Some advise will be greatly appreciated,

I have a 4mb ADSL line with Afrihost, running a business 4mb account,

I seem to always have a problem at night during 6pm and 11pm with international speeds, always ranging from between 50 - 80kb/s

First I thought it was congestion on the local DSLAM, however local speeds run full during this time.

I even get the same speeds using an SAIX or IS account, could congestion impact only international speeds?,

as far as I can see from trace routes and pings everything is in the normal, local 20-60 and EU 180-190.

It's very unlikely that various ISPs would be affected at the same time, as most use different international cables and routing. If there is local congestion, it would affect international traffic. If it's mild enough, local traffic may seem OK but international traffic will experience higher latency and slower throughput accordingly.

Can we see those traceroutes?

I have the same issue with TI and is planning to move away from them end of the month. If Afrihost has the same issue, then I need to look at someone else.

Sign up for a free GB and test it out. If you are having an issue it's in everyone' interest if we troubleshoot to get it sorted :(

Cool. Lemme see if I can find that on your website. Have already been in contact with your call center regarding moving over, but they did not tell me about a test. Would love to compare your offering when TI acts up at night.

Signed up. TI will act up tonight. Will then compare yours and give feedback. Thanks for the tip.

Best to look before you leap (but hoping you will make the leap nonetheless) :)

Won't be a leap. Hate holding on for 2 hours to get through to the call center. That is my biggest motivation. So far my dealings with you guys have been awesome.

JHB DSL Authentication Errors [Medium Impact] 11:38, 12 Jan 2015

We are receiving intermittent reports of clients unable to authenticate on their DSL lines. This has been confirmed by Telkom as a fault on their network, however they have not been able to confirm which areas have been affected and the extent to which clients have been affected. We will update this notice as we receive further updates on the errors clients are experiencing.
We sincerely apologise to affected clients for the disruption to their services.

Broadacres affected.

Strange how there can be line synchronization with Telkom but no authentication with AH. My logic tells me this is a AH issue and not a Telkom issue as per AH message. So tired of dealing with internet issues...

It was confirmed by Telkom. I also think that if you;re testing with a guest account, it's important that to remember that they route differently to ISP (IPC based) accounts, which is why they sometimes authenticate when no ISP account can.

Getting terrible speed here in CT - 0.72 down and 0.17 up! No issues reported on the Afrihost site for this region and also the chat support option is gone....

The South is definitely running well at the moment, could you send me your ADSL username please so that I can check to see what is going on.

So my TI has been acting up since last week. Every night, around 8PM, streaming grinds to a halt. As expected, it happened again last night. After the 4th buffering, I switched over to the free 1GB from Afrihost I registered for yesterday. The 1GB got used up without a hitch. Not once did it buffer. When I got the 99.98% warning email, I switched back to TI and had to endure the buffering till I went to sleep.

Beginning of next month I will be joining the Afrihost family.

Fantastic. Use this link when you sign up (not for bundles) and you'll get a 50% discount on your first month :)

Question though. The free 1GB was capped, so unshaped. I need to get uncapped as we use at least 220GB a month. Can I get Uncapped, Unshaped? Most streaming, outside of school holidays and weekends, are done after 6PM though. What would you suggest I go for?

Good question, and probably no easy answer. Uncapped, Unshaped Business can be pricey, depends on your budget. It also depends on your line speed, becuase at higher line speeds, Uncapped starts to be in similar price range to unshaped Capped accounts.

You can also bring the cost down considerably by bundling your line with data in a Capped, Uncapped or Business bundle.

Maybe drop me a PM so I can get an idea of your speeds and budget and we can discuss the best option.

10Mb/s Business Uncapped been performing horribly since last night. Second hop should be about 10-30 ms.

That is definitely painful! Are you seeing those levels of latency at all times of the day at the moment?

Yes, first noticed it early hours of this morning, so unlikely to be congestion. I get even worse results with WebAfrica backup account. Have submitted ticket PPW-211-97233.

Wondering about something.

Why would something like this happen on the first hop of a traceroute?

I logged a fault with Telkom on 8 Dec which was claimed to be resolved on 27 Dec.
Logged again on 31 Dec, claimed to be resolved on 5 Jan
Logged again today.

Will keep on logging faults

Latencies jump up to over a second but after 5 Jan the first hop ALWAYS just says "Request timed out"?
I don't know what the hell they're doing but it doesn't look like it's making anything better

This is my average speed test result

Afrihost routing to Telkom's network seems to go through the EU:
