I love me some F1 but I draw the line when it comes to DStv.

I'm even considering getting a XBox so I can subscribe to Sky Go instead. Works out to about the same per annum and the on demand programming is significantly better.

I just want something that works when I switch it on, guaranteed. If that costs close to R700/month then so be it.

If I had a 10mb line, or better yet, a 20mb line, and I had an IPTV contract like Sky like you're talking about that worked every-time I used it then that's a different story.

Can't wait for the day that one can order IPTV through your ISP so I can stick it to DSTV :)

Just wanted to say that this weekend was awesome. I was kind to my internet line and it reciprocated. Perhaps the holiday (3 term peoples) did help or perhaps it was the solar flare or fingers that was crossed. Whatever it was, it was great.

Glad to hear it. And holidays are still on - so let's hope the awesome keeps coming :)

With the way that Netflix and the like are growing, it's very likely. News over social media and the web is already killing newspapers, so I have no doubt that streaming media is changing everyone's consumption habits.

I hear you, but unfortunately, in the kinda market we have, we don't have much of a choice, and I demand reliable quality when it comes to F1 :) EDIT: Well, sport in general, eg: Currie cup final! Well Done SHARKS!!! :) (Revenge is Sweet!)

So, I pays the monies :(

I think eventually we'll be at the stage where we can stream what we want on demand, instead of having to subscribe to channels that are 60% fluff and repeats. I still don't understand the point of hundreds of channels - some showing the same thing and repeats.

The internet makes so much more sense.

This is the same problem I'm sitting with. The backhaul hasn't been upgraded to metro-ethernet.

Anyway, tried streaming the GP through BBC iPlayer and it was terrible but Netflix and Hulu were streaming just fine.

It is looking like Afrihost is having trouble with international speeds to Europe and thus some are complaining about sluggish gaming.

My own speed tests back this up as well as poor quality streaming when setting the Netflix UnoTelly Dynamo to the UK.

Not aware of us having any capacity issues with international traffic. Remember that we actually have more international capacity than our local IPC, so there is almost zero contention for international traffic, unless one of our cables goes down completely.

As far as I know, my exchange which is only a block away is still the old kind. I did ask 10210 a while back and they said no.

They dug the streets up and laid fibre over a year ago, and is quite an up-market suburb, so I don't know what they waiting for.

A bit afraid to do that as I follow the philosophy of if it ain't broke don't fix it, but I suppose there is no harm in trying TelkomZA as I know how useless 10210 can be :)

I've been waiting for 10mb since they announced.

It's less about the fibre - which mainly backhaul. It more about the cards at the distribution point and the DSLAM. If either is not able to use ADSL 2+, then you'll be stuck on 4Mbps :(

Not to be a dick, but these are some of the most scalable and highly available sites on the planet. I really think there is something wrong with your monitoring, because you can never tell where or what is causing excessive load on your network and you always rely on customers having to provide traceroutes for troubleshooting. Just always seems more re-active than pro-active.

I think that's pretty impossible. For us to monitor every possible download server, gaming routing, peering link locally and internationally, would be a massive task, flood us with data that would probably have a more negative impact than positive.

The reality is that things wobble and we have to troubleshoot each instance. How other companies run their networks and services is up to them. Our job is to provide connectivity - once you're on their network it's another story.

This is why traceroutes are so important, so that you can see where the problems might lie. We had massive issues with Forbes magazine at one stage, becuase of the way they use geolocation to server content. But then they decided South African content would be routed via Outer Mongolia - causing major hassles :(

Very nice. But weather is a gadget killer. It's the worst feeling when you get that call wrong *he said having lost two routers last year to lightning damage*

Yup. I lost an ADSL modem and a Wifi router through surge plugs in March. Caused a mass of Telkom line problems too.

Seeing some decent performance from this account. All traffic almost exclusively via Rapidgator premium account...

My Business line is still offline (since friday morning)

Afriman asked me to test with another account.

Does anybody have an account for me to test?

My line is still not syncing at the correct speed, it says:

4088Kbps
511Kbps

When it used to be 4Mbps exactly, and half a mb up.

How can I change my ADSL accounts password for my modem?

You mean the [email protected] login?
In your ClientZone, go to the account in question, click on "access details" and enter a new password.

Can you post your router's line stats perhaps?

Hey Afripeeps. Following the statement by Axxess, will AfriHost also be upgrading their lines at no extra cost? Also, will this apply to the business accounts too?

Thanks

Hi Everyone.

It seems I joined AH at a bad time! I came from MWEB (Never had problems) but left when they announced their new policies. Since joining AH our speed has been alright, but the shaping on normal downloads are really starting to frustrate us. When you get home after work trying to download a 30 Mb file on the 1Mbps takes close to an hour (Depending on the shaping).

Most days the shaping only falls away at around 10-12pm. I thought weekends might be different, but are almost the same. At the moment it feels like a lesser service than what MWEB offered.

I know they state that the Business Uncapped accounts are unshaped 24/7. But they also said the normal uncapped accounts are only shaped when the network is busy, so far it has been shaped 85% of the time.

Would it be worth adding the extra R100 for Business Uncapped?

Thanks,

These? :

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4088 Kbps 511 Kbps
Line Attenuation 28.8 dB 15.0 dB
Noise Margin 17.3 dB 11.2 dB

And when I try and connect, it only gets as far as:

Connection Status

Connection Time 00:00:00
Connecting to Server Disconnect
Negotiation Initialize LCP.
Authentication ---
Getting IP Addresses ---
Getting Network Mask ---

Yeah, those.
Those look fine, so I don't see why you're not getting anything better.
Maybe drop TelkomZA a pm and ask him to look into it for you? He can see the noise and whatever that you're experiencing on the line, perhaps he'll spot something wrong.

Or do what I'm doing, drop down to a slower package but go for business instead of home, just for the month of November, to see if AH can sort out their shaping issues by December. Then you actually save a buck for November too
