The situation down South has been abysmal with the typical "Oh dear... let's check that for you... radio silence".
I heard of a problem with MTN's radius server. Someone from up North was informed of that.
Here's the situation... AGAIN :(
Come on Afrihost. Get this **** sorted out. I'm losing my patience. I need to get what I pay for - a stable performant service else please REFUND or ROLLOVER. This whole thing is just getting old.

I'm sorry that you are having a poor experience. You seem to be running tests during the period when we see the highest demand on the network and where we have acknowledged latency to be higher than anyone would like. I'm sure comparing to other ISPs who are not seeing as much demand on their network will return more favourable results at the moment, until we can improve the performance of the network during the peak window :(

This bad ping and/or packetloss from the IPC onwards has become a given during 8-10:30pm on week days.

It's not always poor, but when demand is very high, then we do see some gradual rise in latency and then drop off between those times. The degree to which latency rises fluctuates according to demand, and we've seen quite a few nights where it has not happened at all as we've managed to control demand better than other nights (by shaping Uncapped accounts more effectively).

I feel you pain, I have the exact same problem! Critical Care is absolutely unless, almost 6 months and counting....

Sorry to hear that you are still battling with this issue. I have to say it is something I have never come across before and I think the difficulty has been in convincing Telkom that the issue lies with their BRAS routing.

We'll keep trying to get this sorted for you :(

In other news MTN are saying the Gallows Hill was subjected to a DDS attack.

It isn't an attack it is the Afrihost users performing all the useless trace routes that get requested, just to keep file 13 full, and delay having to actually do anything to solve the problem like admit responsibility or buy more IPC.

Have a great day and please let me know if I can help with anything else!

Gallo Manor was definitely subject to an attack. Sarcasm aside, I think this was a pretty serious disruption for many clients and we had to put in a lot of work and time to try to manage this over the last few days. It was definitely no laughing matter for us, or our clients who's businesses were affected :(

There are too many apologies from AfrieMan, not a good sign of a service provider

When we know we've let our clients down, then it's definitely my job to apologise and hear their grievances. With the recent hosting downtime, those are very valid and there some understandably upset clients.

Similarly, we know our network is not showing it's best performance right now, and that is also something I am hear to listen to our clients about.

If your internet becomes unusable during "peak period" which is generally at night when people are back from work what's the point of having it?

If your network deteriorates during peak period you clearly don't have enough IPC to handle the load. Why would Afrihost be the only ISP seeing high demand mostly at night? I'm sure user patterns are the same regardless of which ISP they are using.

I think it really depends. Many people work from home or offices, and that is the priority period for them, where services are generally performing well. I think this peak demand period is when we see especially high P2P traffic.

Afrihost did make a big hype out of not shaping and that Streaming would get priority. For a while it worked well and I suspect that many of us who have account primly for streaming, switch to Afrihost.
Last year they claimed that the growth in streaming demand had caught them by surprise and they upgraded IPC.
But obviously not by enough.
Bottom line is they encouraged streaming but under estimated it's impact and despite all the excuses it looks like they are out of IPC again.
The good news is that now that most stream users are trying to use Afrihost I now get no problems streaming on Telkom.

It is silly that I have to pay two ISP's and buy 50 Gig from each, but until Afrihost acknowledge the issue and Buy more IPC we ether pay twice or drop them entirely.

Looking at the current usage patterns, Streaming has definitely increased, but is still not close to being the largest percentage of our bandwidth. At the moment we're seeing a lot more P2P traffic across the entire day, with Apples updates also consuming surprising amounts of bandwidth.

Which streaming services do you primarily use? If I may ask.

I guess, I must say I haven't really had life threatening problems with my DSL except sometimes this weekend going to Monday.. But I see it appears to be working fine again

A bit of an eclectic mix really. I several services for either Technical information or Documentary programming.
My wife tends to go for totally different programming and has her own servers.
In the evenings we watch something of common interest, normally a movie or TV series.

Bottom line, if it streams we probably use it, but obviously youtube, Ustream, FilmOn etc.. get the bulk of the demand, followed by the Local and International news streams including livestation and in the evenings it depends which server, often not mainstream, has the content available that we are in the mood for.

At the moment I have YouTube up, and probably will all day, as they have the F1 Practice sessions streaming live. (The advantage of having 3 screens on my development PC :))

Is that total bandwidth or bandwidth used by Capped users?
Are you also able to separate out the growth of P2P based streaming services or will it just show as P2P Traffic if one of those Streaming services is used?

Oh very nice! Which Channel on Youtube has the F1 Practice Sessions on?

How is the Streaming running at the moment? Or have you switched to Telkom?

That's great to hear! It really helps us a great deal to hear how our Client's ADSL connections are holding up.

This is for all of our Users, we usually look at the bandwidth breakdown per region.

At the moment if a Streaming service uses P2P - such as Popcorn Time - it would be classified as P2P. So on the Uncapped accounts it will be shaped.

And before you say it AH, yes there is apparently congestion on my exchange due to some or other fault, but at 3am and speeds are crawling at a snail's pace, I highly doubt one can blame congestion.
Also, speeds are generally better for when Eskom implements load shedding even though there is no load shedding happening in my town.
