Hi All

Recently I have been fighting with Afrihost due to the fact that I have 25% Download and 6.5% P2P shaping being applied on my line for more than 85% of the time. I have monitored this every day for almost a week and every time I checked, the shaping is exactly the same. I have only used 7GB this month, and I have a 2 Mbps uncapped bundle with them. Over an above that, my line was barely used in July as I was having issues with Telkom.

They say the shaping is applied hourly, but every time I've checked, even during off-peak times, the shaping is still the same. I have not been able to download anything I've needed this month because of this. They say that high data usage in the past may affect the shaping, but my usage has probably been less than 15GB every month this year.

They also say that the shaping does not affect real-time services, but even streaming videos has become a task where I need to stop videos on YouTube to allow them to buffer.

This is getting highly frustrating and I do not think I am the only one experiencing these issues as a colleague of mine is having the exact same problem at the moment.

If you are an Afrihost user, please monitor your client zone to determine whether or not the same is being applied to you.

Your input would be appreciated :)

Mine is also shaped 24/7. I've stayed up past 1am and the shaping was still on.

Speedtest just now on a 4MB line:
Last Result:
Download Speed: 1544 kbps (193 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 368 kbps (46 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 237 ms

They are oversubscribed, cancel and move on.
If you want recommendations - try out the mweb trail uncapped account. I tried it out and wasn't that bad actually. For your usage it should be perfect. If you download a lot, >100GB, I heard they start to shape you to death though.

Web Africa also seems like a better option. I'm trying them out end of the month.

I feel that even though I have this constant shaping it not really affecting my downloading, gaming etc. I still get about 280gig on my 4Meg uncapped account. I have looked at other isp and they say i will be throttled if i download this much on their stuff so afrihost is still pretty much the best for me

Yea there is definitely something going on behind the scenes at Afrihost, whatever you do don't touch mweb! Have you asked Afriman to take a look at the account for you? He usually sorts out the problems in a matter of minutes/hours depending on the issue

Hey guys

Thanks for your input, it's a bitter sweet feeling to see that I'm not alone on this. I've been fighting with them for almost a month back and forth. So I've just changed my package to a 2Mbps Business ADSL Bundle, through the Client Zone (good service at least, package swapped over immediately, and only R40 pro-rata for this month.) I can now toggle my business prioritization, turning it off is giving me much better P2P speeds(previously average 5 Kbps, now average 180 Kbps.)

It worked out to paying a little over R100 extra every month, but I think it's worth the certainty that I will get the speed I pay for. Will let you guys know how it goes.

Thanks again mates :)

Afrihost is only good for capped accounts and business uncapped accounts. With such low usage you might be better off going capped.

Ha ha my usage has only been low because I haven't been bothered trying to download because of the shaping. I plan very much on increasing my usage marginally by the end of this month ;) Last night already managed to complete 4 downloads I had running but stopped a while ago because they weren't getting anywhere. I think it will be worth paying the extra little bit every month :)

Do not even get me started.

I have been having issues with Afrihost for well over 70 days now.

My ping is over 1000ms (Yes that is 1k ms).

Still have not sorted it out. They requested speed test and trace routes again from me now for the 8th time. (Yes... i have sent them this information 7 times prior).

I phoned and emailed daily and they requested me not to harass their staff any more! The cheek!!!

O and i am a capped account holder (4meg 100Gig)

Interesting, which hops are giving this latency spike?

That be your exchange being congested 99% likely,or you have a terrible phone line (error rate would confirm that)

Worked fine for over a year. This is a new problem for last two months and they don't know what is wrong. Bloody useless if you ask me. I will give it till the end of this month and if not sorted will cancel and move back to Telkom.

Well I told you the likely culprit ;) Telkom has to upgrade the exchange to fix it,keep logging calls daily for Latency issues and pray

I'd rather not move to Telkom, I know a few people who are with them and are complaining about their new "fair use" crap. In your client zone you should have a tool to test your Telkom line as well, Click "Connectivity" then Click on your Telkom DSL Line, then Click "Test My Line". Run that and if all's good on the physical line you will have all green.

If your connection problems are clearly an exchange issue, how will changing ISP help?

They are doing it to a lot of users. Throttle them to death, and "bit sir, if you upgrade to business package at x amount more , there will not be so much throttling"

Cash hungry BAST@RDS, ever since MTN (took over)
