Afrihost Fibre Feedback

Hi

The fiber is already installed in the complex, and only needs to be connected form inside my house to the box outside. It seems that their sales team are making promises that the technical/implementation team are struggling to meet. Anyway, they have contacted me and will be there on Monday afternoon to install :D

The last bit of the wait is definitely the most painful! :p Super happy to hear that you finally confirmed a date! This is going to be a long weekend for you... ;)

I was hoping things couldn't get any worse. After another 20-hour outage two days ago via Fibrehoods Northriding, we're down once again this morning.
AfriFolks, please check the twitter feed - they say it is an Afrihost fault this time.

Morning! Our Network Team is investigating this now to find out what is going on.

@acp - you're absolutely right re the readiness state of the Fibre offering. I'm receiving manual adjustments on a monthly basis until the systems catch-up.

@luke7777 - I migrated from 20mbps VDSL to 20mbps capped Fibre and it's a relief. AH capped DSL fluctuates from perfect to unworkable multiple times per year. No such issues on AH Fibre. Took a quick peak at the DSL thread and thanked my lucky stars :-)

I'll update you the moment I get feedback!
My question was simply: Should I bring the router to Afrihost head office myself to continue to wait another month for your courier to collect it?

Why must I wait a week for an answer, surely this is not a difficult question?!
Does it really take a month for a courier to collect your faulty router?

I can see that our Warehouse is coordinating the return with the courier company. They should make contact with you shortly.

So 3pm Vumatel should be at my house to do the fiber installation. After that, I should be able to get the object number and insert that on the Client Zone page. How long from there on until I can use it?

Instantly, or maybe about 15 minutes if you do the setup correctly.

My fibre experience so far (Afrihost + OpenServer)

So I recently moved into a house in the Durbanville area in Cape Town and had the option of:
1. ADSL - Distance from exchange makes it a bad choice
2. Fibre with Openserve - ETA 4-6 weeks
3. Fibre with Octotel - Pre-order, another way to say "don't take this if you need internet soon"

So here follows a timeline of my experience with Afrihost/Openserve this far:
17 July - 11:32 - I order a 4/2mbps Home Uncapped installation on Openserve from Afrihost. Told that Openserve would be in contact directly. Installation time of between 4 and 6 weeks.
18 July - 08:00 - My free D-Link Wifi Router is deliverd to my office.
11 August 2017 - 12:00'ish - Openserve contractor contacts me to arrange installation. We set date for Monday 14 August at 12:30
14 August 2017 - 12:30 - I arrive home (had to take special time from work for this) and the guys are ready and waiting. They need to bring the fibre through 4 or 5 manholes before even pulling it into my house. The entire process takes about 4 hours and then they start the splicing. First sign of trouble, not of the available fibres in the manhole are 'lit'. The contractor says it is out of their hands and Openserve needs to provision a fibre line properly first. I ask them to expedite if possible, since I've been on 3G only for more than a month by this time. The contractor says it should take about a week. I need to mention, the installers were very professional and courteous the whole time.
16 August 2017 - 11:45 - Same contractors call me, tell me that the line has been provisioned and we can do the final splicing and install. Admittedly, I'm impressed at this time, it only took 2 days. So I head home and the splicing takes all of 20-30 minutes.
16 August 2017 - 14:00 - I log support call with Afrihost and ask "What now?".
16 August 2017 - 14:09 - ********** responds with instructions. He says I should receive automated instructions as well when Openserve completes the order process, but provides instructions (that work flawlessly) nonetheless.
16 August 2017 - 14:09 - I get the automated mail anyway. Suppose I could've waited....

So at this point, I have internet. Well done all round as the process went fairly smooth (apart from unlit fibre) up to this point.

17 August 2017 - time irrelevant - All is well and I'm getting a fairly good experience. I realise soon though that between me, my wife and our plethora of IP connected devices, the 4/2mbps connection just won't cut it. I decide to upgrade to 10/5 mbps Home Uncapped.
19 August 2017 - 09:35 - Get email from Afrihost telling me that the line will be migrated to 10/5mbps and I get the info on pro-rata billing, etc. Again, relatively painless experience.

But now the problems start...
So I do a few speedtests on Saturday and the results are far from ideal...

I log the following support call to Afrihost:
Good day,

I requested an upgrade from 4/2mbps to 10/5mbps on my Openserve Fibre account.

I received a mail from afrihost that my migration has been done and it also reflects in my client zone app, but the speedtests (to SAIX servers) only reflects the upload portion as being close to correct.

Please see attachments.
https://ibb.co/gO0gmk -- My Clientzone info regarding the line
https://ibb.co/dRNSRk -- My speedtest results to SAIX

The response:

Morning Hendri,

Thank you for your valued e-mail.

The upgrade is complete, are you always getting up to 5Mbps, I did notice that you are on Home Uncapped DSL data package
which we do throttle thus you might notice slower speeds at times as we dynamically manage Uncapped DSL data packages on our network.

Have a great day and please let me know if I can help with anything else!

Warm regards

Pure Internet Joy!

At the time of writing this post, I've used all of 21.31GB on this line but I'm already throttled (according to AH Support)? This doesn't sound right to me.

https://www.afrihost.com/microsites/network/management/ says realtime services (which includes Speedtest at least) should still work fine, even under heavy strain.

I replied as such to **********, but I am still waiting on an answer.

So please Afri{anyone}, help me out here...

Heya techedemic, thanks for your detailed post! It sounds like your experience has been a little bit less than ideal and I'd love to try help you out. :) Please PM me your account info and I'll help you get everything cleared up.

On a side note, we really do like to protect the integrity and the online safety of our staff. As such, I have edited your post to remove the support agents names that were mentioned.

I would suggest staying away from the Afrihost Fibre Home Uncapped plans. I bought into the R4000 off installation deal and opted for the 20Mbps dl and 2Mbps upload. This is a shaped and throttled service which is useless and much slower than my 10Mbps adsl line. I am changing over to a capped 200GB account (don't know how long that will take), which will at least give me the experience of fibre. I wish I did a bit more research on the experience on the Home Uncapped option before signing on. And the moth to month contract is BS as they indicating they will change me up until 18 months of use, so I'm kinda locked into Afrihost for awhile.

Hi Fayaaz, thanks for the heads up. I am in the process of an Afrihost installation, also on the 200GB capped account. Please let me know what your performance is like on the capped package.

My capped account will only be in affect 1 Sep. My capped ADSL with Afrihost is unshaped and fast if that is anything to go by.

Sorted last night. Thanks

Instantly, or maybe about 15 minutes if you do the setup correctly.

My fiber got installed yesterday. Took about 90 minutes, but it was an overall neat job. Entered the object number, boom, online :D

20mbps uncapped seems to be heavily shaped though. I downloaded an Ubuntu torrent (seriously, no jokes), speed ranging from 150KB/s to 1 MB/s. This was last night about 19h00, probably peak time. Being uncapped, that is what I expected, so I'm OK with that. The capped products don't seem to have an option for 20Mbps symmetrical, only 20Mbps up and 2Mbps down.

Best news ever! I'm really glad to hear that your line got installed without a hitch. Which provider are you using again?

I'm on Vumatel. Once the order number was entered, not even 5 minutes before everything was working.

Super happy to hear that you came online so quickly. :) To answer your other question, there is definitely a 20/20Mbps Capped option available on Vumatel.
