Afrihost Fibre Feedback

Just want to share my good news on here. My line was installed on Wednesday morning. I had a bit of a run-around trying to get my account activated since Wednesday, but that was in part my own fault. I just finished talking to Boston R. from online support. He was a tremendously great help in getting my account activated and sending me my username and password.

Very big thank you to Boston R. and Zayne for getting this done for me. I'm going to be doing all kinds of test tonight when I get home. I can't wait!

You're very welcome. I know what it's like to constantly receive criticism and no one ever acknowledging when something goes right. I like to let people know when I am satisfied with their service.

I have one issue, though. I rushed home during lunch break to test the connection, and after resetting both devices and updating my username and password, the connection still seems to not work. It does the exact same thing as it did before.

That sounds very strange! Are you referring to the reset of your Wifi username and password?

I rebooted the router and turned it off and on again. That was the reset I was referring to. After I put the correct username and password.

Everything shows as active and working, even the lights on the ONT and router all show that everything should be working, except, there doesn't seem to be any access to the internet. Even the clientzone says no sessions have been activated yet, but everything is on and connected at the moment.

Morning paoloc. I've asked our Critical Care Team to contact you and assist with finally putting your issue to rest.

Another week of no action, and another meaningless escalation to some department that has done nothing.

Afrihost fibre upgrade from 10mbps to 20mbps initiated on 14 Oct 2017. Despite following up weekly with Afrihost, it's still not done. Buyer beware: Afrihost is not the company it once was.

I managed to get everything sorted out. I've been online since Friday evening and haven't experienced any problems or issues since then. Everything has been smooth sailing for me. Thanks again to Boston and the Afrihost team.

That's awesome to hear! :D

:( That's really not cool. Our Critical Care Team is working to get this resolved as quickly as possible.

Hi AfriTeam,

The Afrihost NNTP server seems to be down/having issues. Very recent articles (less than 7 days) are missing/failing.

Could you check the status please?

While you're at it, still waiting on the capped data reporting issue to be resolved - any updated status other than 'team is working on this'?

Heya acp. Our news servers are definitely up and running. Are you still battling to connect this evening?

I don't have any ETA on Capped Fibre reporting. :(

Not a 100% sure yet on whether something's gone wrong with my setup, but I'm still having issues...

As a test, I did de-activate the AH news server last night for a test with my paid account with longer retention and more connections and the file I was looking for downloaded fine.

Can you perhaps re-post or PM settings for the server, especially retention and connections?

Don't know if I'm alone with this, but since getting my Afrihost/Vumatel Fibre set up, I've been experiencing occasional intermittent DNS issues.

As of yesterday, it got really bad, to the extent where today I changed the DNS of my Windows PC's to Google's DNS, and everything is perfect now.

My Android Phone and Tablet on the other hand, still suffer the DNS issue, since I can't seem to change the DNS at Router level. :(

Sorry about the late reply here, acp. :( I'll find out the best configuration settings from our server admins and drop you a PM. .:)

Really sorry to hear that! :( When you mention DNS issues, do you mean a browser DNS error?

I mean, pages were just getting stuck on "Looking for www.website.com" or Waiting for "www.website.com" and often just timing out with "Server Not Found".

The only reason I suspected DNS as the issue was my system logs, which indicated this:

(Warning) Name resolution for the name www.website.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

After changing my DNS, I got this:
(Information) The following DNS server(s) were successfully validated as active servers that can service this client. 8.8.8.8

Haven't had an issue since.

Thanks for clarifying. :) I'm glad switching to Google DNS solved your problem. We're not seeing any DNS related issues on our network at the moment. I'm sure that the issue you experienced may have only been temporary and isolated. Using auto DNS will give you the best experience on our network as it is optimized with the caches and CDNs we use. Feel free to switch back when you are ready and let me know. :)

To say it solved my problem is a bit of a stretch. Since I can't change my DNS at Router Level, my other devices still have the same issue. I'm not particularly concerned about it at this point. With my Android devices, it's more a minor annoyance than a serious problem.

Google DNS is not ideal, which is why we suggest using Auto. If we are aware of a general problem, we can push new or alternate DNS to you to resolve the problem temporarily - depending on the nature of the issue.

Well, for now I've figured out how to switch all of my devices to Google DNS, and my problems are gone, so the issue is definitely DNS related.

If it's not an Afrihost issue, maybe it's my router. No way of knowing, because I can't specify a DNS at router level.

Either way, everything works right now, so I'm happy.
