Afrihost New Network Feedback - Part 2

Ill ask the question here. I have had poor wifi this weekend. Tried both my router and my buddy's Dlink. I cant figure this one out on the Dlink.

My wifes phone showed connected, but link was only at 5mbps, while my phone was connected at 135mbps. No Whatsapp messages would be sent or received, so there was no throughput, although torrents, youtube and other services were okay.

on my buddys dlink wlan settings i got this. Once i rebooted, all the info was back in, but still struggling with wifi. When i switched over to the Aztech router, wifi was back up again. Buddy also having this issue, so we are kind of testing each others lines and things out. What could be causing the below to disappear?

Sounds like it could either be the devices themselves - some devices have a limitation on the speeds they can connect with. However, it's pretty weird for the differences you mention. We see some strange things happen when accounts can authenticate, send some packets, like Skype or torrents, but other traffic is not working, and this generally points to a Telkom issue at the BRAS. Are you guys both on the same exchange?

no, we are on different exchanges, but live pretty close to each other, and thats the strange bit. Problem is, with the Aztech router my wife's link under her phones wifi is around 75mbps, on the Dlink she gets to around 5mbps. His Dlink is pretty much a few days old, so im not 100% sure on why there is such a difference. Ill ask him to take the router back to Telkom to have it checked

Maybe we should test a little more first. You could both be connected to the same BRAS, but we'd see widespread complaints in that area. I take it that over LAN there are no issues at all?

Non, its basically a wifi issue which has me stumped. I did have a few disconnects where my internet light went red, but then a reboot got it back up again. Streaming was perfect, and general connections fine. My wife could just not get any sort of connection. So something must have or is going wonky somewhere on the router.

For once I'd like to see someone else sponser the nag lan at rAge. So tired of Telkom, everytime they try launch a new product there I end up proving the Telkom sales rep wrong there.

I suppose all is well on your end @Afriman?

It could be interference on that WiFi frequency band, or simply an incompatibility between the devices (which is very rare).

All good. It's a bit hard for other sponsors to get in there since the Telkom DO Gaming league is still the biggest presence in that arena. However, at least it's a good platform (in terms of the whole expo) for all companies to get some face time with clients. Hopefully the social media team from Afrihost will get a chance to do some mooching this year :)

Sooooo on average, how long does it take Afrihost to change my voice line into a DSL line :) Been 5 days now...but not sure if anything happens over weekends though, should I just blame Telkom? Yes I know it can take between 5 - 30 days but trying to see the average or if anyone has any "connection connections" in Telkom!

The SNR & ATTN looks fine, should get a stable connection with that.
This is mine on VDSL and stable connection for months now.

Current Downstream Sync
20440kbps
The current download speed established between the DSLAM and your modem.
SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio)
10.9dB
Signal-to-Noise Ratio on the line. A value below 6dB can cause problems.
Attenuation
20.2dB
The amount of resistance on the line. A value below 55dB is good.

Current Upstream Sync
2044kbps
The current download speed established between the DSLAM and your modem.
SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio)
6.3dB
Signal-to-Noise Ratio on the line. A value below 6dB can cause problems.
Attenuation
19.2dB
The amount of resistance on the line. A value below 55dB is good.

However there seems to be a lot of CRC and HEC errors, so that could indicated a fault on the cable, a street box, the card you connected to at the exchange.

I also had a "metallic" noise according to the technician before, I was switched to a new card at exchange and all was resolved.

Afrihost don't do this physically, they send a request in to telkom on your behalf.
Then it is all up to telkom to send a technician to your exchange where you are connected to make the required changes.
That is why it can take a few days to a few weeks, all depends how quick telkom get a technician out to do it.
OH and then it also depends if there are open ports available for DSL.
