DNS will not affect routing to gaming services unless those games use hostnames instead of ip addresses and even if they do using the ones mentioned above will route to local DNS servers so it won't change your location.

I have my set to fixed DNS inside the router so all my traffic are using them. I use 9.9.9.9 as main and google 8.8.8.8 as secondary. Latency for me in Centurion to those servers in JHB is about 3ms which is very low. Browsing is very snappy too.

Thanks so much for the info. Just out of curiosity. Any reason why you prefer 9.9.9.9 over cloudflare 1.1.1.1?

BTW, I changed mine in the router to use 1.1.1.1 as primary and 8.8.8.8 as secondary and my gosh it loads pages super quick. no lag at all.

I prefer quad9 because it's a free build in antivirus. It blocks malicious sites that host malware on a DNS level which is very cool.

All of them are hosted locally and is just a nap africa peer away from Afrihost so there should not be any delays.

CPT people will obviously prefer Cloudflare because Google only has JHB peering so Cloudflare will be a better choice as Cloudflare peers in JHB, CPT and DUR for the best latency.

In most cases in SA latency to 1.1.1.1 is lower than that of the US. Some interesting info there. Obviously it will depend on location and which Fibre provider but latency is around 3ms to 10ms give or take.

@AfriMan I have just completed a support call with AH via Whatsapp. I am not satisfied with the reasons provided for the full connectivity loss experienced at my home. It sounds like complete and utter rubbish. Please could you advise how I can escalate this issue as the person I dealt with refused to provide me with a reference number? He says that since the issue was resolved by rebooting my ONT and router there is no need for a reference number.

However, the devices were rebooted before contacting AH, and connectivity was not restored until I made contact and the consultant confirmed that he had to reset my connection.

After this, the devices were rebooted and connectivity was restored.

I asked for a reason for the connectivity loss and he responded with:

Could you please confirm if this is a normal and reasonable response? Surely a customer ought to know what has caused full connectivity loss of a fairly expensive service? My wife works from home and this caused major disruption for her. I also work from home occasionaly and it would be nice to be able to plan around a similar event occuring. Basically the response here is that "all AH customers should reasonably expect full connecitivy loss if any event of loadshedding occurs anywhere in South Africa"

This response is simply not acceptable.

Youtube and Netflix buffers on a 20mbps line with my Mibox being the only device connected to the fibre router. As soon as I switch to the Wisp all is well. I see random spikes in jitter over 1000ms

On my Mibox with NordVPN on, stream is flawless. Turning VPN off, same stream starts buffering 50 seconds in and is just unwatchable. Turn the VPN on, back to awesomeness.... Unshaped my a##.

It's so annoying that we need to use a VPN to get the Internet to work correctly lately...

May I ask what area and cable provider? I personally don't do much streaming apart from listening music on youtube and did not notice any buffering.

It will be very concerning because all this traffic is local and Afrihost peer with them locally. If it was shaping it doesn't usually include streaming. Shaping would be on p2p mainly not streaming.

It is Mitchells Fibre. Other people with the same cable provide do not experience these issues. All the afrihost support, if i get hold of them, tells me is that they reset everything. Whatever that means. It all happens intermittently and unfortunately you cant exactly get hold of their support when it happens.
