Okay nice. If it starts misbehaving again let me know. I don't see anything out of the ordinary.

Also changed it to Vumatel Aerial so don't stress if you see the change in ClientZone :)
The speed seems very erratic at times. On Friday from about 11:00 till 14:30 i couldn't connect to a VPN hosted on Telkom it was slow, although i was getting about 90Mbps on the line.
Will definitely let you know if it does it again! Thanks for the help;)

It's just Vumatel's gpon network. It's a bit different than the Vumatel Trenched solution. With Vumatel Aerial/GPON DHCP is managed by us. With Vumatel Trenched DHCP is managed by Vumatel. Vuma Aerial is gpon and Vuma Trenched is Active Ethernet.

If you are still experiencing issues you can drop me the following. Trace route to a local server connected directly to the ONT and a speedtest too with times so I can log a fault with Vumatel.

That's interesting since both I presume have physical fibre in the ground. I know mine is the ground since I saw them dig but my equipment in the house says gpon.

Is it just the ONT which determines which technology you are on?

Yes so the term Trenched and Aerial is not actually correct but it's the most likely so the term stuck with most. It's actually Vumatel Active Ethernet and Vumatel GPON.

Vumatel GPON has quite a few sub sections being originally the old Fibrehoods they have grown quite a bit. Vumatel GPON is the old Fibrehood, Mitchells fibre, Fibre roll outs under Vuma Reach like in Soweto and Vosloosrus and the new addition to the mix Vuma Villages which was SADV.

Openserve only uses a gpon network an that can be Aerial or trenched really so there is no difference at all.

are the mtu settings the same for aerial and trenched? i know trenched is 1500.
 
1500 is the most common size to set it at. A select few is set at 1480 even some routers can only set to 1480 as maximum size.
i always thought gpon is 1480 and ethernet is 1500? i think if you try set gpon to 1500 you'll get fragmentation.
 
Indeed so the max is 1492 then but I did see some advise on how to get the max MTU size here on mybroadband and I think that is some good advise.
you can also use this website:
some routers you have to enable icmp traffic.
