Hi AfriNatic...
Busy streaming dstv and the channel keeps dropping, I have noticed that I am being rebooted a number of times during the day, dropbox keep re-syncing.. is there a fault on the openserve system in Durban, Musgrave??
we are in the same area... if that helps. I do believe its everyone in the area as its a common topic of late with whoever i talk to...not exclusive to Afrihost.

Openserve is experiencing issues in various areas where traffic has spiked dramatically after the upgrades.

Openserve has identified these issues and are working on solutions. Unfortunately there isn't any ETA on any of these issues yet unfortunately. The degraded performances is notably during the evening peak and Sunday afternoon peak.

I had an incident today that Afrinatic should be aware of, and it is a problem... My internet for the last few days has been a bit erratic, fast then slow, I went out around 8:30, got back home around 11am, noticed there was no wifi, went on to the router page, it was saying "cable disconnected" then no response from server" cycling every few minutes between the 2 error messages..

So I whatsapped Afrihost, try this, try that, I explained what was going on, and the whatsapp tech had no idea, he could not understand the cycling between cable disconnected and no response from server.. Eventually I asked could he phone me.. No he cannot..

I went onto the Afrihost app, logged a call me back, about 5 min later got a call-back, and that tech suggested that we try the cable from the ONT to the Router.."Is the LAN 1 light on" it was on and off, when it was off, it was cable disconnect, and when it was on, it was now trying to phone home....

A step closer, so I explained about the issue and the lack of solution from the whatsapp tech.. The whatsapp tech got me to factory reset the router, I now need a new password and my username...The Afrihost app does not show in plain text the password [wish it did...]

I explained to the guy on the phone there is a lack of something on the whatsapp side of the business, how come the techy on the phone got to the ONT LAN 1 fault, but not the whatsapp tech...

Afrihost really should look into "crash analysis" especially when it is so obvious as my case, 2 techs, and only 1 came up with the solution.. Is there any training offered to the whatsapp techs?

Did I have a power failure? Other than the tantrums of eskon no.. The system worked fine.. But I am concerned at the go to factory reset so quick.. That should be a port of last option, not the first...

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with our Whatsapp support team.

We do not store pppoe passwords in plain text as this could put your account at risk and if you have forgotten this password you would need to generate a new one from Clientzone.

Has the issue been resolved? If not I would like to assist.

Hi Afrinatic,
I have no idea.. by that I mean yes the internet is working, but not sure, and 2nd the tech on the phone said he had logged a fault with openserve to come and change the LAN 1 to LAN 2.. Not sure if that is going to happen...

Does your client software record who did what and when? Surely there is a way to find out who I chatted with on whatsapp and who called me? There needs to be a post game analysis.. This is a problem, as the guy on the phone suggested, most folks go to whatsapp, I had both at the same time... Both departments need to be up to standard.. We wasted almost an hour on the phone for nothing, esp the part about factory resetting the router...

We do standard troubleshooting to eliminate any issues that might be on the clients side. Once these steps have been followed we can then log a fault with Openserve.

I will be able to see who you interacted with. Feel free to pm you email linked to your profile for me to pull up your account and also follow up with the fault logged.

We are aware that a number of PoP on Vumatel in CPT has gone down after power has been restored. Vumatel is aware of the outage and techs have been dispatched.

We have added a notice.

Were you uploading to an international source? I'm not sure how exactly steam remote play works there might be a server in between that is not hosted locally.

Through a tracert and a simple lookup of some of the IPs revealed by the trace I discovered that my issue has to do with MTN sending my data on a scenic route all over the country before eventually connecting me to my destination. :cautious:

We peer with MTN at Teraco so that is indeed odd. Have you tried testing with another provider to check how the route goes?

Got connected today - switching from LTE to fibre. Paid for the 200/100 Openserve package, using the supplied Afrihost router and I get these speeds:

Room next door to the router location - WIFI

Mybroadband: https://speedtest.mybroadband.co.za/result/16416907
Ping: 4ms
Download: 95.44Mbps
Upload: 77.62Mbps

Inside the router room - WIFI

Connected via ethernet

As you can see from the first two photos, the speed is wildly inconsistent.

1) Is this inconsistency just how WIFI is on fibre - despite the short range? Or is it the short-comings of Afrihost's supplied router (Huawei WS5200)? I was recommended this as being 'enough' for my needs.

2) Why would the ethernet speed be locked at 100mbps up/down, when the line is asynchronous 200/100? Again, is it a short-coming of the supplied router?

I get much better speed on my LTE (Huawei B618s-22D). Cap size is not important for my work, speed is. If this is the highest I'm likely to get, I guess I need to cancel.

That ethernet speedtest indicates that either the wan or lan port has negotiated at 100Mbps.

Please double check all ethernet cables are cat5e or higher and connected properly.

With regards to the wifi speedtests are you using 5GHz wifi or 2.4GHz?

Thanks for the quick reply.

WIFI is connected via 2.4GHz.

I will check the cables and revert - ethernet cable was given in the router box from Afrihost and the WAN connection from black box to router was given by Nokia (contracted for installation). All is connected via the settings/hardware given to me.

I've tried another 10 or so Speedtests since via WIFI in the next room (no change in place). This is the best outcome so far:

Those aren't that bad for 2.4GHz. You should be able to max the speeds on 5GHz but coverage can play a role.

The cables provided are all CAT5e cables. It might be that the network port on the laptop/dektop only negotiated 100Mbps for some reason.
