Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Hi all

Just a quick heads up our network is busier than usual tonight due to the Windows 8.1 release today. We're coping with the load, but we may see shaping continue a little longer than usual :(

I've already had the 8.1 RTM ISO for a bit ;) still need to do the upgrade on my lappy though :/

Agree ISP's should just not sell this crap anymore. They cant provide this service properly,

They are supplying it properly... Uncapped will never be true uncapped because that would run the ISP into the ground. Afrihosts uncapped is theoretically the closest to uncapped you will get in SA.

Well then there is not much hope then is there. look at the last month's posts here. That is what I base my opinion on.

Hi

I have been a customer of Afrihost for about 2 yeas now.
Got all my friends, the co. I work for and some suppliers to move to Afrihost.

I have spoken to my friend and we all have notes a significant deterioration in QUALITY of Afrihost uncapped product.
This deterioration during office hours is concerning to us.

Afrihost seems to be more interest is giving huge FREE GB to mobile customers than the upkeep of there QUALITY of their ADSL product.

I have been monitoring the forums of other ISP's and there complaints are nowhere near the level of Afrihost's QUALITY complaints.

I am voting with my feet and moving to another provider. They are more expensive but the QUALITY is there.
There does not to be that many pricing complaints but more QUALITY complaints of Afrihost products.

Once Afrihost has the inters of there ALDS customers, I would like to move back to them again.

Is this Afrihost, MTN or both at fault here.

ps. Never looked at TELKOM and will never. Long live the ISP's

Can Afrihost and the other providers handle the Windows 8.1 update tonight? :P

Yoh, no shaping and speedtests looking good but downloads on 10mbps line creeping at 8 to 20 kbps... ouch... I know there is a problem on my exchange so hey... hoping it's that....

Getting bad latency. While there is latency on the network, there will be shaping.

We're not seeing general latency on the network. Checking my monitoring reports and all seems to be normal unless I've missed something.

Did you run a traceroute when this was happening?

Is this on a torrent download? Could be an issue on the seeder's side. Torrents are a great way to max your line but you can never really use it as an indication of line speed :(

So far so good. We saw a slightly more shaping than we have in recent days, but all in all the network is purring along. It could be the Microsoft are a lot more agreeable with downloads than others (like Apple) that don't allow you to pause or cache downloads (not 100% sure on that, though).

But under the circumstances, I'd say we're looking good :)

I am sorry that you feel this, and I totally understand the reasons why you would. Especially on Uncapped, our internet experience has not been at the level we'd like it to be at. While we feel we are still delivering the best performance under the circumstances, we know that this has been a challenge for our clients. I can assure you that that Quality of our client's experience is paramount to us, and every single option is being explored to improve this. Unfortunately, the time frames are mostly out of our hands, and we are doing everything in the short term to improve experience without sacrificing priority services.

Our clients who have been with us for a while, like yourself, will know that we always make it up to our clients (and overcompensate where we can) so I truly believe that at the end of the day, our clients always come out on top.

I would love to chat to you more about this, if you're keen. Drop me a PM :)

are you guys having issues with load atm?

reason i ask is i moved to you guys beginning of this month. to start with i was most impressed with your speed.
however after a average of 2 gb per day over the last 18 d (and thats high mostly because of one spike that i dl`ed xcom from steam) im being perma shaped to 25% Download/ 12.5% P2P. now what bugs the living daylights out of me is that you guys even shape local traffic to death. that and for all the bragging about after hours stuff i dont use my computer after hours.

i guess the question that i have is this. am i to expect this as a standard level of service from now on?
am i classed as a heavy user?

Haha, guess that works :)

It surely is not the ideal, but after I've tested that damn site with every account available on the ISP market in SA at around the same time of day and noticed NO difference in performance...well...I just give it. Figured it is a problem on Twitch's side.

Already resorting to rather finding the videos on youtube and watching them there as that is always as fast as possible. For the ones I have to get from Twitch - download. The only problem is that Twitch splits up long vids in 30min segments...so it's a bit of a pain to "grab" all the parts of a video. They do downloads at max line speed though, so it's a small price to pay to watch in HD without any buffering when they're done :D

Well then there is not much hope then is there. look at the last month's posts here. That is what I base my opinion on.

I've been lucky enough (or unlucky, depends on how you want to see it) to see us go through a few challenges. I've always seen us come out of the issues in favour of clients, and most clients when they review the big picture have always felt that at the end they have scored.

When we waited several months for new capacity shortly after moving networks, we unshaped all our clients for a long time, and also gave our mystery discounts and bonuses. We always make sure our clients feel good about being part of our family, but every ISP will have it's challenges. I truly believe that what sets Afrihost apart is how we handle ourselves and keep communicating with our clients until the issue is resolved, and how we reward our clients who stick with us through the rough times.

...I saw my arse with "uncapped" accounts with other ISP's...now i see the same here. Conclusion?...GET CAPPED!

I don't think Uncapped is an unviable product. Unfortunately the reality is that there has to be a give somewhere though, I'm not sure if many people understand that because they pay a set rate for an unlimited amount of bandwidth, they must give way to clients who pay per GB when there is high demand. The reality is that Uncapped still uses the lion's share of our capacity, so it's not that Uncapped really gets a raw deal at all. The challenge for us is to ensure that both Uncapped as a whole, and each individual client, get the very best value that we can offer. We feel that our approach and policies does definitely deliver more value in our clients favour (many Uncapped clients have been only occassionally shaped or unshaped for months), over time based shaping and throttling. However, when there is an exceptional situation like the current one, we do our very best to continue delivering the best experience. When the situation is improved, we believe that our clients will feel that in general they have got the best of the relationship and a better overall experience than they would have elsewhere.
