My speeds have really improved over the last few days. After 6, I'm getting unshaped speeds.
.

Struggling to stream hulu where netflix is fine... Any suggestions? On Apple TV. Account currently unshaped on 4mb line

Guess I spoke to soon, my problems seem to be back in full swing:

What the heck is going on with afrihost and their shaping? I used to have 1mb account and was never shaped, up to 100gb a month. Now on a 4mb line and being shaped to 18% after only 40gb day after day. Completely unacceptable if you ask me, might as well go back to a 1mb line as 18% of 4mb is just as unusable as 18% on 1mb....at least for what I use my internet for.

Are there any decent ISPs out there and if so who. Don't mind the odd shaping but it should at least remain usable, and no I haven't downloaded a single torrent in at least 6 months and never go over 100gb so I would not consider myself a heavy user.

They say time and time again that their shaping is NOT based on personal use but rather overall demand on the network! Why people keep saying oh i only dowloaded whatever amount and am being shaped bla bla blah really amazes me.

That being said afripeople. I am not shaped atm but please have a look at my speedtests and traceroutes. Something is not right. Thatnks in advnce

I am sorry, but if you cannot offer your clients more than 18% of what that are paying you for then you are either useless or just plain ripping them off and horribly over subscribed. When I signed up with them there was something I read about shaping being based on usage over some previous period. And why I should I be shaped by the same margins as someone who downloads 1000gb a month?

That's like getting the same fine for doing 140km/h as someone doing 220km/h. It's supposed to be a FAIR USAGE policy. Nothing fair about that.

They are probably paying more than you.

an excerpt from a neverending back-and-forth email with the afrihost support guy who is trying to help me

it is simple: something is broken with your uncapped. your claims that realtime services are not impeded at all is a load of hogwash. your own capped service outperforms the uncapped service for video streaming by several orders of magnitude.

i have no doubt that i will be downgrading my afrihost account to a capped account (and even there your options are carefully crafted to force a choice into uncapped, by omitting 150GB and 200GB capped bundles).

what am i supposed to do? you guys are super friendly, but three weeks (!!!) have passed and NOTHING! i reckon unfriendly, 4Mbps mweb uncapped was miles ahead of you guys and your 10Mbps uncapped. and that is sad, because i really like your guys' attitude. but what good is friendly, incompetent, service?

please give me a solution. i want 150GB bundled data. i am not planning to abuse P2P or NZB or VPN or any other nefarious abusive activities. i just want to be able to watch youtube! how hard can that be?

escalate this. please. i don't care what you do to fix it, as long as it's on your tab. send someone over to my house. lay fibre to my house. i don't care! i feel super cheated.

i have paid R900 this month and you gave me 25GB of data "gratis" because my uncapped sucked so much!

i have spent hours doing troubleshooting for you.

tell me, what do you expect me to do?

Well I guess it's the cost of all-you-can-eat Internet. The kitchen can't keep up and the restaurant is hardly breaking even.
I dont think that is fair. They have kept up with demand up until recently. They are working on a fix. Just be patient. I am a new customer and from my posts you can see that my experience has not been perfect. That being said, they have been extremely helpfull!

Their customer service is top notch, I hope they increase their bandwidth soon rather than shape more users.

EDIT: My previous comment applies to all ISPs offering cheap uncapped, not just Afrihost.

It's 3:38am.... Shaping Policy: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P....this is your best effort service?
