Correct me if i am wrong please, so if i use my line like a granny, email, the occasional HTTP download, some NNTP and Youtube now and then. The heavy downloaders will kill the experience for me even i did not download the internet?

No, not necessarily. While NNTP may be shaped (and HTTP downloads to a lesser extent) your real time experience will always be the best it can be. And remember you can always Turbocharge for 5 Free sessions if you need a priority download.

If this has been answered please excuse me,
real time experience count as what? (My current ISP kills just about everything between 8am and 5pm)
Does NNTP constitute as P2P or HTTP
HTTP download, is that like drivers and so

Thx

NNTP is classified in the same bracket as P2P on our network, but we shape HTTP a lot less. HTTP would be driver's or direct file downloads as opposed to file sharing like torrents.

It definitely won't be the rest of the year, and I promise there are solutions being implemented, I just can't give a fixed timeline or confirmation just yet. But we didn't get to here just to let our service slide into horribleness. We are as motivated as all of our clients to get our service back to what we think it should be.

I promise I will post details as soon as I have confirmation of exactly what is being done.

I hope so. It seems totally endless on our side. For me it's gotten to the point where this feels like the new norm.

I really don't think it will be much longer, I know that we are all concerned about the experience our clients are having and our director's are applying every possible pressure point to get some changes going.

Please hang in there, I promise we will make good on our promise and look after all our clients in the end :)

How is it the same? It is a different protocol. No upload.....it is not P2P???????

The shaping being applied by afrihost lately is a bit absurd,
I barely did 20Gb this month and the applied extensive shaping,
to a point that i can only stream and download from after 11pm.
then there are people who do 1Tb a month.

Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P

on a 2mb line you are not left with much bandwidth after this kind of shaping.

I'll bat this one to give AfriMan a break. Most shaping devices use a catergory calles P2P/Filesharing, which includes NNTP, torrents and other similar services. Hence why it generally falls under P2P even though it isn't technically?

Sure as hell isnt being used for newsreading........

Hehe. I think a lot of us are going to hold you to that. I just want to speak on behalf of myself in saying thanks for the constant feedback. Although it's not always that informative or what we want to hear it is appreciated. And massive kudos for taking a lot of flak and staying calm. Not sure I could have.

Agreed. Good job AfriMan and AfriGuy.

Yes, a category called P2P/Filesharing. There is nothing technically being shared with NNTP, as it is receiving a file from a server. Sure, wether it is used for newsreading or not, it should be shaped differently, and seperately from torrents, as there are tonnes of people using torrents, and less using NNTP...

It's not that we think they are the same, they fall into the same shaping bracket, because of the nature of the amount of data demanded, not really because of the similar nature of the technologies.

Shaping should not be affecting your streaming at all and we need to be sure that this is the reason that your account is slow. Have you run a trace route to check if there is congestion or latency on your line?

Thanks - spot on ;)

Shaping should never affect gaming. Are you downloading at the same time as gaming or what services are running in the background at the same time?

Hey.

I pmed u those details u asked for about the bad pings I get when I play Hon to Eu. I sent u traceroutes one where Telkom gets sub 250 and afrihost gets over 350.

I forget if it was u or afriguy I sent these details to a week ago, but it hasn't been sorted out yet :(

Yes, that is understandable, but the data demand is less on NNTP, due to the flocks of people using P2P. So, in essence, P2P is already restricted on these accounts by default, regardless of the usage by individual users, so meaning, there is already a disadvantage for NNTP as well, or is it unshaped by default, and only abusers will get the P2P based shaping?

If the latter is the case, then it's fine

Haha, I have a small box of smashed things that I vent my frustration on :)

Seriously though, I totally understand the frustration. Like I said to a few clients in PMs, I may not always have something concrete to say, but I'm gonna make sure you guys know that I'm here, I'm listening, and I sincerely care about what you guys are experiencing and feeling. I'll fix what I can and offer what I can to get us all through this rough patch.

So, I am always available on PM and I promise we're gonna be reading through and replying to all the posts that we can just so that you always know that we're around and are here to help :)

I just feel that it's unfair that there are people that are still allowed to download huge amounts while others are shaped horribly. We have discussed it and will probably switch ours back to 100gig capped but I feel then I will rather give another ISP a chance even if it costs a little more. Starting to feel Afrihost is just way oversubscribed.
