Shaping is still pretty bad for me. Any news on a resolution AfriMan or AfriGuy?

That's what I did. But in Afrihost's defense - TI also shapes, but they're less transparent about when they're shaping :P Try it for a month before you make your final decision.

I still am a big Afrihost fan, and I hope to move back as soon as the capacity issues are sorted!

Thanks for the support, and I am really confident we'll be back in the high life soon :)

I also think that we have a great, transparent and fair system. We also based our systems on international best practice, where throttling does not really exist any more (except on Mobile, I think)

I came to ask if anyone else has been experiencing the horrible shaping by Afrihost, seems I'm not the only one.
I'll be moving to Telkom Uncapped soon. I seriously can't take the shaping anymore.

There is unfortunately more shaping than we'd like on our North region Uncapped users. We are putting some solutions together to alleviate this :(

Shaping is very heavy the last couple of days (since Sunday): 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P (Im in Pretoria, Villieria)

11:20pm and slight improvement since my last post.

Shaping Policy: 50% Download/ 37.5% P2P

We will always try to shape as little as we possibly can, and shape as few people as we can. Remember that shaping is usage driven, the demand at any point in time determines how many clients need to be shaped and to what extent.

11pm Shaping Policy: 75% Download/ 75% P2P Guess we're about to become night owls again like on the R7 weekends back in the day.

It's definitely a great idea to schedule your downloads overnight, I do. You may only get your content a little later, but it's definitely less frustrating that constantly checking a download to see when it's going to arrive. If more of us did that, we would be able to shape less on the network - as it's mostly torrents that use up the available capacity.

As nice as that sounds it doesn't really work out because those of us who are awake at that time would find normal services affected. A proof of that would be when webafrica brought out their uncapped they had a "rolling window" and free leech time was midnight to 5 am I think, come midnight latencies would skyrocket normal browsing would slow down, it was a mess.

25% download/25% P2P

I simply CANNOT understand how this is reasonable at 10pm !?

Please do remember that shaping is based on demand. We can't control when clients decide to use their bandwidth and when not to. We simply respond to the demand as quickly as possible to protect the network, and to give more bandwidth back to clients where we possibly can.

Hey Afriman/guy/girl

I currently have 4mb home uncapped account, if i upgrade to 10mb home uncapped bundle which includes the adsl line how does it work? Do I have to notify Telkom or do you guys do all that stuff? how does payment work if the line is transferred halfway through the month? How long does it take? And finally how long does it take if I decide to unbundle the line in the future? Thanks.

Hi there

You don't have to notify Telkom, when you sign up online we do all the admin with them. However, if you have an active data product with Telkom, they will not transfer your line. Also, you need to cancel any data and email addresses (also considered a data product) directly with them, as we cannot transfer over to us. Otherwise it's all automated :)

We bill you pro-rata for the remainder of the month. The transfer can take up it 14 days, but it's usually not that long these days. You can unbundle or bundle instantly in ClientZone, but moving back to Telkom is at the end of the month provided you have cancelled before the 25th (billing run).

We will never allow demand to rise such that latencies are affected. We know that our clients need to game or work on their own time, so the network has to be rock solid 24/7 for priority services.

After 9pm and instead of easing , its gotten even worse.

Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 12.5% P2P

I left Mweb cause was getting throttled on downloads . But at least I could game online.

Now. Getting heavily shaped on downloads and unable to play online for the past 2 weeks. cause of getting over 350ms to Eu when playing Hon.

Shaping should never affect gaming. Are you downloading at the same time as gaming or what services are running in the background at the same time?

Downloaded 70gigs on a 2mb account and I'm being heavily shaped. Last month I downloaded 370gigs and the month before 406. This is really getting out of hand.

As I've mentioned before, we don't use download thresholds, we shape according to demand and capacity at any given time.

Correct me if i am wrong please, so if i use my line like a granny, email, the occasional HTTP download, some NNTP and Youtube now and then. The heavy downloaders will kill the experience for me even i did not download the internet?

Correct.

Any indication of when this might be or are we going to be stuck like this for the rest of the year?

The fact that people are getting shaped all the way into the early hours of the morning means that shaping does not ease after hours as has been claimed.

Please provide us some transparency! :(

It definitely does, but we are speaking from a general network perspective. We'd have to check each individual account to see how their usage has been classified and if they are being shaped less or unshaped.

Drop me your username by PM and I'll check for you. Remember that if you're not connected, you won't see any changes until you log in again.

It definitely won't be the rest of the year, and I promise there are solutions being implemented, I just can't give a fixed timeline or confirmation just yet. But we didn't get to here just to let our service slide into horribleness. We are as motivated as all of our clients to get our service back to what we think it should be.

I promise I will post details as soon as I have confirmation of exactly what is being done.
