Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

I've already had the 8.1 RTM ISO for a bit ;) still need to do the upgrade on my lappy though :/

They are supplying it properly... Uncapped will never be true uncapped because that would run the ISP into the ground. Afrihosts uncapped is theoretically the closest to uncapped you will get in SA.

Thanks for the post. We do believe that we are getting closer to the spirit of Uncapped, and we hope that throttles are going to fade away completely if others follow our lead. We don't think that providing a client with a connection which they can barely use, even for realtime services, is the best solution. We don't want to punish our clients for their usage, but we hoping that everyone will eat responsibly at the buffet so everyone gets their share of the good stuff :)

It surely is not the ideal, but after I've tested that damn site with every account available on the ISP market in SA at around the same time of day and noticed NO difference in performance...well...I just give it. Figured it is a problem on Twitch's side.

Already resorting to rather finding the videos on youtube and watching them there as that is always as fast as possible. For the ones I have to get from Twitch - download. The only problem is that Twitch splits up long vids in 30min segments...so it's a bit of a pain to "grab" all the parts of a video. They do downloads at max line speed though, so it's a small price to pay to watch in HD without any buffering when they're done :D

I saw a post on Twitter saying that Twitch have issues with capacity on their servers. So when they hit a high load, latecomers get a terrible experience. Apparently they have discussed upgrading servers. That just from the tweets I read, I haven't seen anything official from twitch.

From what I've seen, Twitch eats a lot of bandwidth, even on medium quality. So if you also happen to have congestion or a slight sync issue affecting throughput on your line, it will stutter a lot.

are you guys having issues with load atm?

reason i ask is i moved to you guys beginning of this month. to start with i was most impressed with your speed.
however after a average of 2 gb per day over the last 18 d (and thats high mostly because of one spike that i dl`ed xcom from steam) im being perma shaped to 25% Download/ 12.5% P2P. now what bugs the living daylights out of me is that you guys even shape local traffic to death. that and for all the bragging about after hours stuff i dont use my computer after hours.

i guess the question that i have is this. am i to expect this as a standard level of service from now on?
am i classed as a heavy user?

We have a dynamic system that analyzes traffic based on usage patterns. But it's also important to remember that we shape by demand vs capacity. So it depends on how many clients we need to shape in order to bring demand in line with capacity. So when demand is light, we can shape less clients (and to a lesser extent). When demand is heavy, we have to shape more clients (but we try to keep the shaping as light as we possibly can). When demand is very excessive, we have to shape as many clients as it requires to manage the demand to protect the network from high latency and slow throughput on real time services. This essentially means that any Uncapped client could be shaped, depending on the demand at any given point in time. We not had to do this for a very long time (probably not since we lit up our extra capacity at the beginning of the year, but it has always been catered for in our AUP.

It's not the standard you should expect, as we don't like having to shape this much and this frequently, but we need to do it to give the best possible experience to our clients. I really do believe that if we did it any differently we would have more clients who were very unhappy with the overall quality of experience. We are looking at our options to see what solutions can be put into place as quickly as possible. I'm confident that one we've done so we'll be back to the experience we've had for most of the year.

Did anyone else have numerous drop outs on their connection over the last few minutes.

Running continuous ping to Google now and it seems stable but I want to check if there's something going on.

My internet connection dropped randomly at about 8 as well... restarted my router and everything was fine when I left for work.

Mine might be doing the same, no idea, not at home. Please let me know what happens.

What area are you in?

I'm in the Germiston area.

Looks like one click fix is borked as well.

"Tweak ADSL Line failed
Please try again. If you still have problems, please contact us."

Afrihost live chat "Please leave a message". According to switchboard they're havbing more support calls than normal. I'm guessing then that there's a problem.

Nothing out of the ordinary on the network. Is it maybe a Telkom issue in your area? Whereabout are you?

It seems to have stabilised now. Doesn't look like any Telkom issues. Looks like the only reported issue is in Craddock.

Whatever it is seems to have calmed down now. I'll monitor and report back if it surfaces again.

Latency now sitting at 300ms to local, I can barely get 1mbps on a 10mbps line.....

I see some similar spikes in my reports as well. Have asked the team to address on the KZN IPC. I think it should improve in about 10-15 minutes once their changes take effect.

To get onto the Telkom there has to be more than a "wobble" on the exchange. Usually has to be utter devastation before it's acknowledged :(

Wouldn't be the first time. It's be fine now for a while. Must have been gremlins.

It seems I spoke too soon. It just dropped out again. But it only lasted a few seconds. Seems to be some sort of intermittent problem.
I've logged a support request but Afrihost seems a little bogged down so I doubt it'll be a speedy reply.

Edit: And as I said this I got a reply that the port was recreated.

Turbocharged at home, 157KB/s on a 4mbps line. At work connection is flying on Mweb 4mbps, 400KB/s plus. Used the works free 1GB from Afrihost, does about 150KB/s. Tested Mweb at home, 450KB/s. You guys overloaded a bit regarding data and so? Oh also not able to view my Invoices in Clientzone. I actually had to limit my speed on the Mweb connection here at work to 150KB/s, the max im getting at home with Turbocharge LOL.

EDIT

Getting close to 400KB/s now after 30Min of turbocharge.

A little feedback. Seems my line is having lots of port errors and a Telkom fault has been logged. So yea, twas Telkom.
