Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Fair enough but you'd have to define reasonable shaping. I also don't think that reverting to T&C's is unethical... This is far from the Mweb saga.

Anyway, in order for real time services to perform as intended it doesn't look like Afrihost have any other alternative but to severely shape home uncapped users right now and hence my initial remark about hitting blood out of a stone.

Monday to Friday 07:00 to 18:00....there defined. Hell torrents could even be shaped till 23:59. But HTTP downloads shaped after hours and weekends is not on, otherwise home uncapped is no longer usable for Steam or Origin. Unless these can be excluded. And yes I am one of those sticking and have switched to a business account. I also do agree with the others views that the Home Uncapped product is completely different to what we were use to, which is sad because it fit 100% of usage profiles, now more like 30% of usage profiles(figures thumbsucked)

Of course for added fun every disgruntled Home user who switches to a Business account likely further eats into what's available for us runts of the Afrihost litter.

Unlikely. There should be very different contention ratios for the products with seperate'ish, bandwitdth allocations. If that makes any sense.

A little feedback on my line sync issue. Had a tech here this morning. After having a poke around the line in the house he drove to the box on the corner. Turns out that at some point on Friday morning some other tech must have been busy in the box and through some muppetry, managed to loosen a wire on my line.
Took the guy all of 5 minutes to fix it. Syncing back to normal.

Kudos to all of the Afrihost techs that made an effort to assist. Through the whole issue I had constant feedback, fault logging and calls from you guys making an effort to help me. I do appreciate seeing that level of support.

Thanks, you've got a point about customer service, something we see rarely here in the eastern cape. I've asked Afriman for a test account, holding fingers and it should help me decide about AH. I'm getting around 3.8 dl from FNB all the time so far so we'll see how well AH compares, considering I'll actually be able to download torrents on AH unlike FNB. I'm hoping the ping times will be better especially for gaming.

I think blocking torrents allows FNB to run a very clean network, but I don't think any other ISP is really in a position to do that. Torrents open multiple threads and it really plays havoc with the network, as well as using up a fair chunk of our network capacity.

But let's hope that you'll get the performance you're looking for on our service :)

Wow, you're the exception to the rule with regard to constant feedback!

Been all happy and merry for the past 2 weeks I have been with afrihost.

Woke up this morning to check this in my client zone.

Shaping Policy: 50% Download/ 50% P2P

Any idea when this will be lifted ? From Pe ....

It shouldn't be long, we're not generally seeing very heavy demand from the South in relation to capacity. We are seeing a slight increase in traffic this morning, but it's probably due to the weekend, etc.

I'm really glad that the issue was sorted out, sounds like you got a great Telkom tech as well. Glad we could help :)

We do manage our available bandwidth as best we can with the capacity we have available. We make sure that different products don't content with each other so that we can still offer a good experience.

Also, the volume of clients moving over is not significant enough to noticeably affect your experience. The reality is Uncapped accounts are still using the bulk of our capacity, not Business or Capped accounts.

Have to agree, I have to constantly mail or pm someone to remind them that I have been having a **** experience since the 19th of September. But I am still sitting with latency spikes on my exchange. No feedback in sight!!

That's crazy....
I'm still awaiting feedback from Afriguy which he promised to give me on 8 October!

Comon guys!

Our Specialist team need to await feedback from Telkom in order to give you any form of feedback. We're in constant communication with Telkom to have your fault resolved.

Sorry about this :( I've asked our team to run a follow up on this for you. Any mails from us since I escalated things for you?

None related....
I had Telkom come over and the tech himself told me that there was some electrical interference. That was around two weeks ago.
Nothing from your helpdesk... your guys don't return calls either.

If there's an external factor here (like an electrical fence) or something of the sort there isn't a whole lot Telkom can do :( Regardless, I'll do my best to have some feedback from our team on this for you.

Nope - Telkom resolved it previously by disconnecting the port next to mine at the exchange...

Hi AfriGuy,

Why does shaping affect my ping? I get on average 200 when not shaped to international and 280 when shaped with lots of spikes...

That's maybe something for us to think about, though it may mean splitting into different products - like heavy use and light use, and we try to keep our offerings as simple as possible for our clients.

But definitely an option we could consider for the future :)

HAHAHAHAHA, please tell me, if afrihost deals with the abusers, would you want to know and what would you do if you found out
