It's 3:38am.... Shaping Policy: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P....this is your best effort service?

Just woke up and checked mine, which is sitting at 12.5% / 6.25%, the same it usually is every single day from about 8am till midnight (bar some slight improvements at some points on weekends... Except judging by the (minimal, but still unfinished) downloads I queued overnight as has been so repeatedly begged for by Afrihost, I was shaped this most severe and most poor way all night long too. So much for having and PAYING for a 10mbps line/account!

Saw 50/25 at some point after 10pm last night, before I clocked out for the day. This morning saw a pre-6am return to the now normal 18.8/6.25. Yeah... 'improving'...

Has Afrihost been struggling this past night or is Apple just crumbling to server the world Mavericks? 800 megs during the night :( I see other users in South Africa managed to download it last night.

But wait, I can post annoying **** on Facebook flawlessly. Is there anywhere I can sign up for an account that prioritizes my priorities, not services based on what the masses use? I guess this is how unshapped accounts get business. /rant

Edit: Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 12.5% P2P. Ouch!

Started the download last night and it timed out sometime during the nigh:mad:
Didn't want to continue downloading.
Started the download all over again and it says it has 15+ hours left.... FFS
It's almost starting to feel like shaping has become near permanent

EDIT: Scap that... 22+ hours

Damn, you're going to beat me to it. When mine isn't "calculating" it's telling me 1 day 13 hours

I tried downloading google earth on sunday night and it told me it will be finished in 6 days. ..
This has turned into a circus.
Ps and while someone I know is running 24/7 torrents at over 200kBs on a 4MB line I call bs on the shape by usage policy.

Guys the % they show..... lets say they show shaping of 12% is that what they remove from your line speed or is that what you get.

like lets say that you have a 10meg line and it shows 10% then you get 100kbps?

It's what you get, unfortunately...

Struggling to stream hulu where netflix is fine... Any suggestions? On Apple TV. Account currently unshaped on 4mb line

If you're not being shaped, then there should definitely not be an issue. But shaping in anyway should not affect streaming. Maybe an issue on either Hulu, or with the DNS provider :(

Hey mr Arfiman, did you see my posts with my speedtests and traceroutes? Please have a look on page 332.

Thanks

Was this a line issue previously. Traces should some strange results but consistently poor, but it seems after the Telkom exchange here - but could be due to a number of issues.

Please drop me a PM so we can see if this is a problem on our side or if it's the same issue as before :(

What the heck is going on with afrihost and their shaping? I used to have 1mb account and was never shaped, up to 100gb a month. Now on a 4mb line and being shaped to 18% after only 40gb day after day. Completely unacceptable if you ask me, might as well go back to a 1mb line as 18% of 4mb is just as unusable as 18% on 1mb....at least for what I use my internet for.

Are there any decent ISPs out there and if so who. Don't mind the odd shaping but it should at least remain usable, and no I haven't downloaded a single torrent in at least 6 months and never go over 100gb so I would not consider myself a heavy user.

It's never about punishing clients for their usage, we only shape out of necessity. We always try to limit the number of clients who are shaped as much as we can, and the extent that we have to shape. But as demand grows, we have to increase that number to ensure that priority real time services are not affected by high latency and slow throughput for streaming, etc. When demand is very excessive, then it's is conceivable that we have to shape the maximum number of clients to the maximum degree to keep the network running at optimum for the benefit of all clients.

You internet should always remain useable and offer value for money, even with shaping applied, which we do not feel is the case with throttling - which is why we moved away from this.

We feel our system is the most fair and offers the best overall experience in the circumstances, but we are always open to suggestions from our clients if they have ideas of how we can do things better :(

They say time and time again that their shaping is NOT based on personal use but rather overall demand on the network! Why people keep saying oh i only dowloaded whatever amount and am being shaped bla bla blah really amazes me.

That being said afripeople. I am not shaped atm but please have a look at my speedtests and traceroutes. Something is not right. Thatnks in advnce

Thanks for posting this. We do tend to repeat ourselves - but it's our job to make sure that all our clients understand what we are trying to do and our reasons for doing it. We also hope that our intentions are clear - that we are doing what we feel is in the best interests of ALL our clients and the best overall internet experience we can deliver with the resources we have at present.

Have asked you for a PM, so please drop me one when you can :)

Thanks for the heads up... got a response.
