Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

I'm afraid Telkom have very set times on when their techs are available. I too have had to take a day off to have a previous line fault sorted :(

But nothing will be different with the techy coming to my house again. he will test my line, tell me there is no fault and that he will log it with the other guys in charge of the exchange?

I would rather speak to your legal team

Do you really believe that we're lying to you though? :(
Drop me a PM and I'll pass on an email address as to where to we can discuss this further. Perhaps a phone call may also help clear things up.

I'm sure our team is aware of this though? Have you mailed us confirmation of this?

How the mighty have fallen.

0kb/s download on Steam right now and I'm told that I must download at a different time.

Seems like Afrihost has followed after Mweb. This shaping should have started before they got the ISP of the year award.

OK, let's make it real clear here. Throttling is limiting the speed of an internet connection compared to its maximum throughput. You're saying that you're not throttling. Your argument for why you're not throttling is that you're only limiting the speed of data packets that are not going to Nepal, so hence it's not throttling. The amount of mental gymnastics required to get to such a conclusion is staggering, and I pity you for having to make such a claim in public.

I honestly think we can have this debate for days o.0
We'll shape P2P and downloads where needed while the rest of your connection will be at it's maximum.

Too bad that anything that's not Youtube is classified as being P2P. So if you're not using Youtube (and in some cases even if you are), effectively everything you do is throttled to the ground.

I know it's really frustrating :(
Today has been an exceptionally busy day on our network - with a stack of software updates being pulled down. You can expect improvements.

I am worried you will tie me into non-disclosure so i may not say anything about our discussions. I think that whoever wrote your AUP and network design did not communicate very well. you specifically state to which you will shape a certain service, hence you are throttling that service, throttle is not defined by usage at all, nor does it state it is only a throttle if the entire account is slowed down.

Seeing as the ASA has cleared up what uncapped truly means today I wonder what they say throttling is

Thanks for all the replies Afrihost but I'm still not sure I agree. A lot of the people here seem to be on the same shaping as I am: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P (yes, right now at 4 in the afternoon). Now maybe I don't understand exactly what services fall into what category but you say streaming services, I assume TED, YouTube, Apple TV, Netflix, DSTV catchup... whatever, are not affected but this is definitely not the case, these are affected.

Now I maintain, trying to stream something at 0.77mb or 18.8% of 4mb is not usable. Frankly I don't care if my maverics download takes 2 hours or 10, I click the button and it runs in the background till it's done but sitting waiting for a video to buffer or a website to load is frustrating. And I still don't get how all of a sardine your network is so busy you can only give everyone less than a 5th of their line speed when it's been running flawlessly for months. At those kind of speeds I'm better off going for your 2mb business uncapped/unshaped for the same price as the 4mb uncapped/shaped and get 2.5 times the speed??

Like many others I am happy with the customer service and my web hosting etc run like a dream but please sort this out.

What's your browsing, VoIP, RDP etc services like?
Again - I'd prefer to chat about this over PM as I'd like to look at your account in a bit more detail. I feel discussing broader details here is blurring any resolution :(

I think you're assuming we're the devil, which we definitely aren't :( We want to be the good guys.
If you're really set on taking this further - as I said, drop me a mail and we can talk further. I'll give you a shout a bit later if you'd like too - to discuss this in a more "face to face" type manner.

No ways the devil would shape us this much..

I cannot see PM resolving anything either, my query about an afrihost account unable to even reach 4MbI git the whole overheads story, yet i eliminated this by eliminating the line as a possibility, I was told that it has never been seen that a afrihost 4mb account has reached 4mbps. that doesnt sound like a 4mb account to me.

A call to the masses, on a 4mb account, please stabalise your line to 5 or 6mb, do a speedtest and post your result. I hope to atleast find one account that is capable of bursting beyond 3.6

Quote from mail sent to AfriHost person.... :)

Howsit dude,

This is now the second day in a row that Telkom just rocks up at my house when no one is there. No phone call to ask if anyone is home, nothing!! Could you please ask them to come over the weekend when someone is there to open for them?

Also, Telkom was at my house Saturday and couldn't find anything wrong with my line itself. I think they need to go to the exchange and not my house?

Thanks

Well, then maybe you should send me a reply rather than insisting that your marketing material is true? :) The issue here is completely independent from how my personal account is (or isn't) performing. What you're doing is throttling, even if you claim it is shaping. Shaping has a quite clear definition, and you're not meeting it by any stretch of imagination.

I am getting to much criss-cross facts and it worries me, someone earlier mention you have a standard non disclosure in your signature which is accepted when the mail is opened, the same way using your account is an automatic agreement to the latest AUP and Ts and Cs

I've been with AH for a year now. 1st as a 1mb uncapped user and since April a 4mb uncapped user and I have definitely noticed a degradation in the service over the past couple of months.

Over the past two evenings I have spent close to 1 hour on my cellphone to the call centre trying to resolve as to why I don't have an active connection. AH logged a fault and I'm still waiting for feedback.
